HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 150
BY REPRESENTATIVE COX
A RESOLUTION
To commend Ms. Clevella "Ma" Gafford on her sixty years of excellence in teaching.
WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana is extremely proud to honor Ms. Clevella "Ma"
Gafford as an educator for her sixty years of service in educating countless young people
from Red River Parish and the surrounding communities who have gone on to become
successful citizens, parents, employers, and employees in the town of Coushatta, the state
of Louisiana, and throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Gafford began her teaching career in 1957 and worked daily to
open the world of learning for students, holding them to high expectations, challenging them
to think critically, pushing them to excel in the face of any obstacle, and guiding their
development as citizens; and 
WHEREAS, excellent teaching is a labor of love and Ms. Gafford often used her own
resources for her classrooms where students have the opportunity to display creativity and
imagination and develop a passion for learning that will last a lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Gafford taught at Springville High School, Coushatta High School
and Ware Youth Center; and
WHEREAS, among those future leaders that Ms. Gafford educated was Kenny Cox,
then a 10
th
 grade student at Coushatta High School, who would later be elected to serve in
the Louisiana Legislature,  representing House District No. 43; and
WHEREAS, as evidence of her enduring efforts, Dr. Johnny Cox, mayor of the town
of Coushatta, on behalf of the town council, citizens, businesses, and employees of the town
of Coushatta, proclaimed May 27, 2017, as "Ms. Gafford's Day", in order to honor Ms.
Gafford for an outstanding career as an educator; and

WHEREAS, it is also appropriate for the state of Louisiana to recognize Ms. Gafford
and to honor her for her commitment and untiring dedication to her students and their
education.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Ms. Clevella Gafford for her many years of
service and dedication to the education of the children of this state; does hereby recognize
and acclaim her contributions and public service; and does hereby extend to her best wishes
for success and happiness in all of her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Ms. Clevella Gafford.
