HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 27
BY REPRESENTATIVES FOIL AND BARRAS
A RESOLUTION
To recognize Monday, April 17, 2017, as DASH Diet Day at the state capitol and to
commend Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Center for
its contributions to the development of the DASH diet program.
WHEREAS, the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet was
developed as a result of a federally funded trial study which took place at four sites across
the United States, one of which was the Pennington Biomedical Research Center; and
WHEREAS, the researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center finalized the
diets; and
WHEREAS, in 2017, U.S. News and World Report magazine rated the DASH diet
as best diet overall for the seventh year in a row; and
WHEREAS, the DASH diet is the main diet promoted by the National Heart, Lung,
and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health; and
WHEREAS, the DASH diet is a lower-fat diet with slightly higher protein and
emphasizes fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, and whole grains; and
WHEREAS, the DASH diet recommends eight to ten servings of fruits and
vegetables, and thus it qualifies as a cancer-preventative diet as defined by the National
Cancer Institute; and
WHEREAS, the inclusion of dairy products in the DASH diet is consistent with
recommendations for reduction of osteoporosis; and
WHEREAS, the focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in the DASH diet
assures increased consumption of fiber; and

WHEREAS, follow-up studies at Pennington Biomedical Research Center and other
sites across the United States confirm that the DASH diet promotes a healthier lifestyle and
weight management.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Monday, April 17, 2017, as DASH Diet Day
at the state capitol and commends LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center for its
pivotal contributions to the development of this acclaimed nutritional health program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the executive director of LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
