SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates Tuesday, April 11, 2017, as Ponchatoula
Strawberry Festival Day
1 A RESOLUTION
2To designate Tuesday, April 11, 2017, as Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Day in the state
3 of Louisiana.
4 WHEREAS, the forty-sixth annual Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival will be held
5April 7 through 9, 2017, at Memorial Park in historic and beautiful Ponchatoula; and
6 WHEREAS, the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival was organized in 1971, and the
7first festival was held in April of 1972; and
8 WHEREAS, the first Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival was cosponsored by the
9Ponchatoula Jaycees and the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce, both of which provided
10three members to serve on the festival board; and
11 WHEREAS, the intent of this committee was to host a festival that not only provided
12an opportunity for local charitable organizations to raise money for their clubs, but also to
13honor all of the hardworking local strawberry farmers and to promote their industry; and
14 WHEREAS, the committee and many other interested volunteers worked diligently
15for months planning the first festival; and
16 WHEREAS, for more than forty years, the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival has
17provided a venue as the largest fundraiser for nonprofit and charitable organizations; and
18 WHEREAS, the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival attracts both young and old to its
19annual celebration of Ponchatoula's legendary delicacy, and food booths annually feature
20popular choices like strawberry shortcake and deep-fried strawberries; and

1 WHEREAS, the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival celebrates its unique status as one
2of the only festivals at which nonprofit organizations are the only vendors on the official
3festival grounds.
4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
5Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Tuesday, April 11, 2017, as Ponchatoula
6Strawberry Festival Day in the state of Louisiana and does hereby recognize the wonderful
7activities of this exceptional festival.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
9to the 2017 chairman of the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival, Jimmy Schliegelmeyer.
