HLS 17RS-1570 ORIGINAL 2017 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 75 BY REPRESENTATIVE SCHEXNAYDER SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Tuesday, May 2, 2017, as Marathon Petroleum Corporation Day at the state capitol 1 A RESOLUTION 2To recognize Tuesday, May 2, 2017, as Marathon Petroleum Corporation Day at the state 3 capitol. 4 WHEREAS, Marathon Petroleum Corporation, a company with a one hundred 5thirty-year history, became an independent corporation listed on the New York Stock 6Exchange in 2011; and 7 WHEREAS, Health and Safety, Environmental Stewardship, Integrity, Corporate 8Citizenship, and an Inclusive Culture are core principles that guide Marathon Petroleum 9Corporation's approach to doing business; and 10 WHEREAS, Marathon Petroleum Corporation is the nation's third-largest petroleum 11refiner, with a total crude-distillation capacity of one million eight hundred seventeen 12thousand barrels per day across its seven-plant refinery system, and distributes petroleum 13products via an extensive network of pipelines and terminals; and 14 WHEREAS, Marathon Petroleum Corporation's Garyville refinery commenced 15operations in St. John the Baptist Parish in 1976; and 16 WHEREAS, the Garyville Major Expansion Project (GME), completed by Marathon 17Petroleum Corporation in 2009 at a cost of $3.9 billion, is one of the largest private-sector 18capital investments in Louisiana history; and 19 WHEREAS, as a result of the GME and the subsequent optimization, the Garyville 20refinery has a crude-distillation capacity of five hundred forty-three thousand barrels per Page 1 of 2 HLS 17RS-1570 ORIGINAL HR Original NO. 75 1calendar day, ranking it as the third-largest petroleum refinery in the United States and the 2largest refinery in Louisiana; and 3 WHEREAS, Marathon Petroleum Corporation's Louisiana Refining Division is 4committed to safety and environmental stewardship, evidenced by the fact that the 5company's Garyville refinery is the nation's only petroleum refinery admitted to the United 6States Environmental Protection Agency's Voluntary Early Reduction Program for Air 7Toxics under the Clean Air Act, has been an Occupational Safety and Health Administration 8Voluntary Protection Program Star Site since 1994, and has received twenty-two Governor's 9Environmental Leadership Awards; and 10 WHEREAS, Marathon Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries and affiliates have 11a full-time Louisiana workforce of more than nine hundred dedicated and talented company 12employees; and 13 WHEREAS, Marathon Petroleum Corporation's Louisiana Refining Division and its 14employees are actively involved in their communities through numerous volunteer efforts, 15including humanitarian aid and relief following major storms and floods; partners in 16education with all local kindergarten through twelfth-grade schools, providing monetary and 17mentoring support in St. John the Baptist Parish; scholarships and internships for Louisiana 18State University, South Central Louisiana Technical College, and River Parishes Community 19College; St. John the Baptist Parish United Way; the San Francisco Plantation Frisco 20Festival; and many other community organizations and activities. 21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 22Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 2, 2017, as Marathon 23Petroleum Corporation Day at the state capitol.
