DIGEST SB 106 Original 2017 Regular Session Bishop Proposed law requires each public postsecondary management board shall adopt a policy requiring each institution under its supervision and management to develop and implement an action plan to address the prevention of unplanned pregnancies among unmarried students. Proposed law provides that the plan shall: (1) Incorporate unplanned pregnancy prevention information into student success courses and student orientation. (2)As deemed appropriate, incorporate information into academic courses that is recognized as medically accurate by the American Congress of Obstetricans and Gynecologists including, without limitation, information on abstinence. (3) Identify opportunities to raise awareness of and provide resources for the prevention of unplanned pregnancies to the entire student body. (4) Identify opportunities for postsecondary students to serve as mentors or role models of successful behaviors and healthy choices for high school students. (5) Identify public and private grants to help address the prevention of unplanned pregnancy and promote student success. (6)Collaborate with community health care providers and federally qualified health centers to promote access to care. (7) Identify challenges faced by students who are single parents and possible methods to assist such students to complete college. (8) Identify other topics or issues related to the prevention and reduction of unplanned pregnancies among postsecondary students. Proposed law requires each public postsecondary institution to submit the required action plan to the appropriate management board by December 1, 2017, and to provide a status report by December first of each year. Proposed law requires each public postsecondary management board to submit a report, including any recommendations for legislative action, to the Senate and House committees on education and the Senate and House committees on health and welfare by February first of each year.
