Present law classifies certain types of cancer a an occupational disease or infirmity connected
with the duties of a firefighter.
Present law provides that after ten years of service, if a firefighter develops a disabling
cancer, that the cancer shall be classified as an occupational disease or infirmity.
Proposed law changes present law to provide that the cancer does not have to be disabling
in order for the firefighter to qualify as having an occupational disease or infirmity connected
with his duties.
Present law provides that disabling cancers originating in the bladder, brain, colon, liver,
pancreas, skin, kidney, or gastrointestinal or tract, and leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple
myeloma are occupational diseases or infirmities connected with a firefighter's duties.
Proposed law retains present law as it relates to which cancers are connected with the duties
of a firefighter and further includes cancers of the reproductive tract, prostate cancer,
testicular cancer, or any other type of cancer for which a firefighter has a statistically
significant increased risk of developing due to occupational exposure.
Proposed law removes the requirement that the cancer be disabling in order to be classified
as an occupational disease or infirmity connected with a firefighter's employment duties.
Effective August 1, 2017.

any other type of cancer for which a firefighter has a statistically significant
increased risk of developing due to occupational exposure to the list of
cancers listed in present law that are classified as occupational diseases or
infirmities.
