1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 17:1681.1(A) and (B), relative to scholarships for children of
3 certain law enforcement officers and other investigative employees killed or
4 permanently disabled in the performance of duty; to allow use of the scholarships for
5 part-time attendance; and to provide for related matters.
6 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 17:1681.1(A) and (B) are hereby amended and reenacted to read as
8 follows:
9 ยง1681.1. Scholarships for children of police officers, deputy sheriffs, or certain
10 probation and parole officers killed or permanently disabled in
11 performance of duty; certain other investigative employees
12 A. Any child of a police officer, deputy sheriff, or adult probation and parole
13 officer within the division of probation and parole of the Department of Public
14 Safety and Corrections who was or is killed or permanently disabled after January 1,
15 1973, in the course and scope of the performance of his duties as such, which child
16 is otherwise eligible and meets all of the entrance requirements of a college or
17 university, shall be admitted to such college or university without the payment of any

1 fees or other charges for tuition, books, reference manuals, and other aids to
2 instruction required in any undertaken for any required course and room and board
3 as long as such child meets the academic standards and complies with the rules and
4 regulations of such college or university required for attendance therein as a full-time
5 student. Such exemption shall exist for such child for the number of semesters
6 required of a full-time student to obtain one bachelor's degree offered by such
7 college or university.
8 B. In no event shall such a scholarship exceed eight semesters for any one
9 child. (1) A scholarship awarded to a student pursuant to this Section shall be
10 provided for the time period required for the student to earn one
11 undergraduate degree or one vocational or technical certificate or diploma.
12 (2) Such scholarship shall cover not more than:
13 (a) One hundred twenty hours of course work required to earn a
14 bachelor's degree.
15 (b) Seventy-five hours of course work required to earn an associate's
16 degree.
17 (c) Sixty hours of course work required to earn a vocational or technical
18 certificate or diploma.
19 (3) Notwithstanding the provisions of Paragraph (2) of this Subsection,
20 for a student who first earns a transferable associate's degree from a public
21 two-year institution and then transfers to a public four-year college or
22 university, the scholarship provided in this Section shall cover an additional
23 sixty hours of course work required to earn a bachelor's degree.

25 Section 2. This Act shall become effective upon signature by the governor or, if not
26 signed by the governor, upon expiration of the time for bills to become law without signature
27 by the governor, as provided by Article III, Section 18 of the Constitution of Louisiana. If
28 vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become
29 effective on the day following such approval.

Present law provides that any child of a police officer, deputy sheriff, or adult probation and
parole officer within the Department of Public Safety and Corrections killed or permanently
disabled, and certain other investigative employees killed, in the performance of his duties,
shall be admitted to a public college or university without the payment of any fees or other
charges for tuition, books, and other aids required in any undertaken course and room and
board as long as such child meets the academic standards and complies with the rules and
regulations of such college or university required for attendance as a full-time student.
Further provides that the exemption shall exist for such child for the number of semesters
required of a full-time student to obtain one bachelor's degree but in no event shall such
scholarship exceed eight semesters for any one child.
Proposed law extends present law benefits to cover part-time attendance.
Proposed law provides that the scholarship shall be provided for the time period required to
earn one undergraduate degree or one vocational or technical certificate or diploma and shall
not cover more than:
(1)One hundred twenty hours of course work required to earn a bachelor's degree.
(2)Seventy-five hours of course work required to earn an associate's degree.
(3)Sixty hours of course work required to earn a vocational or technical certificate or
diploma.
Proposed law provides if a student first earns a transferable associate's degree from a public
two-year institution and then transfers to a public four-year college or university, the
scholarship shall cover an additional 60 hours of course work required to earn a bachelor's
degree.
Effective upon signature of the governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
