Commends Edward Earl Reed Jr. on being named to the 2017 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend and congratulate Edward Earl Reed Jr. on being named to the 2017 Louisiana 3 Sports Hall of Fame. 4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year 5 collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of 6 sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talent worthy of being named to the hall 7 of fame; and 8 WHEREAS, the 2017 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes 9 Edward Earl Reed Jr.; and 10 WHEREAS, he was born on September 11, 1978, in St. Rose, Louisiana, and 11 attended Destrehan High School where he excelled on the Wildcat track and football teams, 12 including being an all-state selection at defensive back and as a kick returner; and 13 WHEREAS, he attended the University of Miami, where he was a standout defensive 14 back and played on the 2001 Hurricane team that won the 2001 National Collegiate Athletic 15 Association Championship; and 16 WHEREAS, after his college career, he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, where 17 in his twelve years on the team, he holds the records for the most career interceptions, most 18 career interception return yards, most career interception return touchdowns, most passes Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 113 SLS 17RS-646 ORIGINAL 1 defended, and most interception-return yards in a single game, and was voted to the Pro 2 Bowl three times; and 3 WHEREAS, he was instrumental in the Ravens' 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 4 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, 5 Louisiana, on January 24, 2013; and 6 WHEREAS, in 2013 he became a free agent and briefly joined the Houston Texans 7 and the New York Jets before retiring from professional football on May 7, 2015; and 8 WHEREAS, during his successful career he racked up NFL records for the longest 9 interception return at 107 yards, the most interception return yards, tied for the most playoff 10 career interceptions, tied for the most career blocked punts returned for touchdowns, and was 11 the first person in National Football League history to return an interception, punt, blocked 12 punt, and fumble for a touchdown; and 13 WHEREAS, the outstanding football career of Edward Earl Reed Jr. has rightly 14 earned him a place among the many greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 16 commend and congratulate Edward Earl Reed Jr. on being named to the 2017 Louisiana 17 Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 19 Edward Earl Reed Jr. The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by McHenry Lee.
