SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 120

LEGIS POWERS/FUNCTIONS.  Declares October 1, 2017, as World Peace Day in
Louisiana.
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To declare October 1, 2017, as "World Peace Day" in the state of Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, the members of the Legislature of Louisiana recognize the need to
4 address violence in all its forms throughout the world, including violence within families and
5 communities and violence among nations and cultures, in order that the people of Louisiana
6 and the rest of the world may benefit; and
7 WHEREAS, there is a universal desire among all people for peace within families,
8 peace within communities, peace among nations, and peace within the human heart; and
9 WHEREAS, people from all walks of life throughout the world have long struggled
10 against the use of violence and have promoted peace among individuals and nations; and
11 WHEREAS, the Institute of All Nations, Inc., a private, nonprofit corporation,
12 permanently chartered by the regents of the state of New York, which began under the
13 cochairmanship of former United States Supreme Court Justice, Arthur J. Goldberg, and
14 former United Nations Ambassador Arthur S. Lall, with Dr. Rama C. Mohanty of Louisiana,
15 as general secretary, adopted a resolution that World Peace Day be observed internationally
16 each October first; and
17 WHEREAS, observance of World Peace Day in Louisiana began in 1998, and is
18 designed to raise mass awareness against violence at home and abroad, to recall the innocent

1 victims of violence and to show support for their families, and to recognize and promote
2 peace workers, peacemakers, and peace organizations that have struggled and continue to
3 strive to end violence, to improve the human condition, and to bring about greater peace and
4 well-being to communities, families, and individuals in the state; and
5 WHEREAS, the Louisiana World Peace Day Committee, comprised of
6 representatives from various religions, religious organizations, cultures, and ethnic
7 backgrounds, plans activities to observe World Peace Day and encourages World Peace Day
8 observance by local communities, schools, workplaces, families, and individuals; and
9 WHEREAS, the committee has as its mission to create and promote awareness in the
10 minds of people all over the world about caring and respect for each other as being in the
11 interest of the individual; to recognize and honor those who have worked and continue to
12 work for these ideas and values; to promote widespread awareness of and increased support
13 against violence; and to recognize peacemakers, peace workers, and peace organizations that
14 have worked and continue to work to end violence; and
15 WHEREAS, the Louisiana World Peace Day Committee seeks to bring greater peace
16 and well-being to communities, families, and individuals in Louisiana and across the world,
17 with its theme, "World Peace Begins with You and Me"; and
18 WHEREAS, since 2009, the Louisiana World Peace Day Committee has partnered
19 with the Legislative Youth Advisory Council, to encourage students to submit an entry
20 describing the student's vision and ideas of world peace through art, essay, music, poem,
21 picture, or video, with selected entries being placed on display in the rotunda of the state
22 capitol during October; and
23 WHEREAS, recognition of World Peace Day is a lasting tribute to the dedication and
24 efforts of the late Dr. Rama C. Mohanty, PhD, peacemaker and founder of the Louisiana
25 World Peace Day Committee, and his lifelong pursuit of world peace and understanding
26 among individuals; and
27 WHEREAS, people, communities, organizations, churches, chapels, temples,
28 synagogues, mosques, and other institutions of worship are urged to come together in
29 conferences, forums, workshops, and conventions on October 1, 2017, to create mass
30 awareness against violence, to honor those who have worked and continue to work in the

1 promotion of peace, and to joyfully celebrate the message of peace with open hearts and
2 minds.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
4 declare October 1, 2017, as "World Peace Day" in the state of Louisiana, does hereby
5 commend and encourage continued diligence against violence in this state and throughout
6 the nation, and does hereby urge all citizens and all community organizations of Louisiana
7 to join in this observance.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
9 Louisiana World Peace Day Committee.
