2017 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 41 BY SENATOR WALSWORTH AND REPRESENTATI VE STEVE CARTER A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend Jerry Stovall upon his retirement from the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation. WHEREAS, Jerry Stovall has a long and distinguished career as a respected and important sports figure in the state, and as the chief executive officer of the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation, where he has dedicated his time to making the capital city area better for its citizens by bringing people together through intramural sporting events; and WHEREAS, his stellar career began after he graduated from West Monroe High School and went to play college football for Louisiana State University, where he was a unanimous selection to the 1962 College Football All-America Team as a halfback and was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year; and WHEREAS, after completing college, he went on to play professionally for the National Football League with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1963 until 1971; and WHEREAS, after his professional football career, Jerry Stovall became an assistant football coach at LSU and eventually the head coach, and in that capacity he compiled a 22- 21-2 record in four seasons and led the LSU Tigers to an appearance in the 1983 Orange Bowl; and WHEREAS, after his head coaching stint, he was appointed athletic director for Louisiana Tech University, where he served from 1990-1994; and WHEREAS, shortly after, he was appointed the chief executive officer of the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation, for over a decade as the leader of that respected organization, he has worked ceaselessly to enhance the quality of life of the Baton Rouge area, by bringing people of all stripes together through such popular sporting events as the Louisiana Marathon, the United Cup Soccer Tournament, the United States Specialty Sports Association Tiger Town Showdown, and the Purple and Gold Gymnastic Meet, among others; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 41 ENROLLED WHEREAS, his long and stellar career and his tireless work in helping create a better Baton Rouge for all its citizens has earned Jerry Stovall a place among the finest of Louisiana's citizens. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Jerry Stovall on his long and distinguished career as a leading sports figure and for his many years of service to the people of Baton Rouge and to the citizens of this state.
