SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 56
BY SENATORS COLOMB, BARROW, HEWITT, MIZELL AND PETERSON AND
REPRESENTATIVES AMEDEE, CARPENTER, DAVIS, EMERSON,
HILFERTY, HILL, HODGES, HORTON, JACKSON, NANCY
LANDRY, MARCELLE, MORENO, NORTON, SMITH, THOMAS
AND WHITE 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends  Bria Janai Williams upon being selected for a 2017
Women of Excellence Award and a Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation
Scholarship.
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To commend Bria Janai Williams upon her receipt of a 2017 Women of Excellence Award
3 from the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation in the category of
4 College Women of Excellence and upon being a recipient of a Louisiana Legislative
5 Women's Caucus Foundation Scholarship.
6 WHEREAS, Bria Janai Williams, is currently a second year graduate student in the
7 industrial/organizational psychology master's program at Louisiana Tech University in
8 Ruston, Louisiana, where she maintains a 4.0 grade point average; and
9 WHEREAS, before attending Louisiana Tech, Bria attended the Louisiana Scholars'
10 College at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, graduating with a Bachelor of
11 Science in psychology; and
12 WHEREAS, over the course of her undergraduate years, Bria was very active on
13 campus serving as the president of the African American Caucus, external affairs
14 commissioner for the Student Government Association, volunteer chairman for the Blue Key
15 Honors Society, writer for the school newspaper, sports anchor for the school news station,
16 freshmen orientation leader, and a member of other honor societies and organizations; and
17 WHEREAS, some of Bria's proudest moments include becoming a member of Alpha
18 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, being crowned Northwestern State University's

1 Homecoming queen and spending a semester abroad in Managua, Nicaragua; and
2 WHEREAS, Bria currently works as an intern with CenturyLink, a global
3 communications hosting cloud and IT services company on the Fortune 500 list of America's
4 largest corporations, and between school and work she also volunteers with the local United
5 Way chapter every Wednesday through the "Read. Learn. Succeed." initiative where
6 community members partner with second and third graders to help students improve their
7 reading proficiency; and
8 WHEREAS, through these and other service learning opportunities, she finds that
9 she has grown in the areas of teamwork, problem solving and action planning, and working
10 hands on in the community has fostered her empathy and self-efficacy and has allowed her
11 to take an active role in helping to shape her community, Bria prays that her life will be a
12 public example of all the wonderful things God is willing and able to do in the lives of those
13 that trust and love him; and
14 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation created the
15 Women of Excellence Awards to recognize and honor extraordinary women across the state
16 for their outstanding achievements and contributions; and
17 WHEREAS, recipients of the Women of Excellence Awards exhibit characteristics
18 of integrity and professionalism, personify excellence in their area of specialty, and are
19 committed to community service to better society as a whole; and
20 WHEREAS, for 2017, there are four categories for the Women of Excellence
21 Awards: College Women of Excellence, High School Women of Excellence, Louisiana Hero
22 of Excellence, and Nonprofit of Excellence; and
23 WHEREAS, the recipients of the 2017 Women of Excellence Awards are being
24 recognized at the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation's Women of
25 Excellence Awards & Scholarships Ceremony and Reception on Tuesday, May 9, 2017; and
26 WHEREAS, Bria has been named a recipient of a 2017 Women of Excellence Award
27 in the category of College Women of Excellence and is also a recipient of a Louisiana
28 Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation Scholarship for her accomplishments and
29 personification of excellence in integrity, character, academics, leadership, and community
30 service; and

1 WHEREAS, Bria merits a sincere and heartfelt measure of commendation for her
2 dedication to excellence and outstanding accomplishments, and it is appropriate for the
3 Legislature of Louisiana to commend her upon receipt of a 2017 Women of Excellence
4 Award from the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation and a Louisiana
5 Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation Scholarship.
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
7 commend Bria Janai Williams upon her receipt of a 2017 Women of Excellence Award from
8 the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation in the category of College Women
9 of Excellence and upon her receipt of a Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation
10 Scholarship; does hereby recognize and record for posterity her singular contributions to the
11 citizens of Louisiana; and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous
12 pride and honor that she brings to her community and the state of Louisiana.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
14 Bria Janai Williams.
