Designates Tuesday, April 11, 2017, as AKA Day at the capitol. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To designate Tuesday April 11, 2017, as "AKA Day" at the capitol and to commend the 3 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. 4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 5 Sorority, Incorporated, for one hundred nine years of exemplary leadership and outstanding 6 community service, and to designate Tuesday, April 11, 2017, as AKA Day at the state 7 capitol; and 8 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, which has the distinction 9 of being the first sorority established by African American college women, was founded at 10 Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908; and 11 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's unending quest to be "Supreme in 12 Service to All Mankind" spans domestic and international boundaries through the service 13 of members of more than nine hundred eighty-three chapters around the world; and 14 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty-six of these chapters located on 15 college and university campuses and active alumnae groups in communities throughout the 16 state; and 17 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is a union of over two 18 hundred eighty-three thousand energetic, ambitious, and dedicated college-trained women Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 6 SLS 17RS-479 ORIGINAL 1 who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of service to promote community 2 initiatives in health preservation, preventive health education, academic excellence, and 3 economic empowerment; and 4 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapters encourage members to become 5 involved and committed community volunteers in five primary service target areas that 6 actively contribute to the educational, civic, and social lives of the citizens of Louisiana; and 7 WHEREAS, the five primary service target areas include educational enrichment, 8 health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership, and global impact, and 9 such target areas expand into the 2014-2018 International Program theme of, "Launching 10 New Dimensions of Service", in which members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will 11 continue to implement service projects globally; and 12 WHEREAS, whether making and sending dresses to little girls in Liberia, providing 13 school supplies for children of incarcerated parents, purchasing livestock to support women 14 farmers in Kenya and Ecuador, rebuilding homes in the Gulf Region of the United States, 15 providing scholastic and beautification projects to historically black colleges, or developing 16 emerging young leaders through mentoring programs throughout the nation, the women of 17 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are committed to making a positive impact upon 18 campuses, communities, our nation, and the world; and 19 WHEREAS, AKA Day at the state capitol is a national program through which 20 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members throughout the nation meet with their legislators to 21 address issues that are pertinent to their communities. 22 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 23 designate Tuesday April 11, 2017, as AKA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol and does 24 hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 25 Sorority, Incorporated for their exemplary leadership and outstanding community service, 26 and for the tremendous honor and pride these women bring to their families, friends, 27 communities, the state of Louisiana, our nation, and to communities across the globe. 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 29 Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, the international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, 30 Incorporated.
