SLS 17RS-1942 ORIGINAL 2017 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 122 BY SENATOR LUNEAU COMMENDATIONS. Commends the Burnaman Family Association on its many accomplishments. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend the Burnaman Family Association on its accomplishments. 3 WHEREAS, the Burnaman Family Association was organized in 2000 as a nonprofit 4 organization: 5 (1) To unite the descendants of Sarah and Phillip Burnaman I and to strengthen 6 family ties through genealogical and historical research. 7 (2) To promote the socialization and fellowship of members of the Burnaman Family 8 Association. 9 (3) To encourage recreation, enjoyment, and contact of family members through 10 communication, meetings, conferences, and reunions; and 11 WHEREAS, it was suggested and approved by the membership to begin holding an 12 auction on Friday night at the reunions which are held every two years with the proceeds 13 being used to fund a scholarship fund to be awarded to members or children of members of 14 the association; and 15 WHEREAS, the scholarship requirements include: 16 (1) A completed application form. 17 (2) A handwritten essay by the applicant explaining why he or she is applying for the 18 scholarship and what is the applicant's goal in life. Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 122 SLS 17RS-1942 ORIGINAL 1 (3) An essay by the applicant on "The importance of family, ancestors, traditions and 2 family values to me". 3 (4) Proof that the applicant is enrolled as a full time student of higher education, 4 vocational, technical or trade schools or other institutions of higher learning; and 5 WHEREAS, the scholarship amount was set at five hundred dollars per year with at 6 least one scholarship being awarded and more if funds permitted and, currently, four of the 7 scholarship recipients have completed college; and 8 WHEREAS, the first scholarship was awarded in 2012 to Merritt Alexandra Luneau 9 who was attending LSU in Baton Rouge and from 2012 through 2017, sixteen scholarships 10 have been awarded with fourteen recipients attending schools in Louisiana; and 11 WHEREAS, in 2017, five scholarships were awarded, with two students attending 12 Louisiana College in Pineville, one student at University of Louisiana Monroe, one at LSU, 13 and one at Central Louisiana Technical College in Alexandria; and 14 WHEREAS, the association endeavors "to promote higher learning" for young adults 15 of the association. 16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 17 does hereby commend the Burnaman Family Association on its accomplishments. 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 19 Burnaman Family Association.
