SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 152
BY SENATOR PETERSON 
SENATE.  Recognizes Thursday, June 1, 2017, as the 33
rd
 annual Red and White Day at the
Louisiana Legislature.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To recognize Thursday, June 1, 2017, as the thirty-third annual Red and White Day at the
3 Louisiana Legislature.
4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated
5 on one hundred four years of service and outstanding achievements in the community, the
6 state, and the world; and
7 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Social Action Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
8 Incorporated would like to acknowledge that the vision of Red and White Day at the
9 Louisiana Legislature that began in 1985 has resulted in Red and White Day growing from
10 a Louisiana tradition to one observed by many of the sororities and fraternities, more than
11 one thousand chapters throughout the country, and held annually at the nation's capital in
12 Washington, D.C.; and
13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by
14 twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective
15 strength to promote academic excellence; and
16 WHEREAS, they organized to provide scholarships and support to those in need, to
17 educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, to
18 highlight issues, and find solutions to problems in their communities; and

1 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrates one hundred and four years of
2 exercising its collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance
3 to the community; and
4 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private,
5 nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs
6 in local communities and throughout the world; and
7 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek letter
8 sorority, a sisterhood of more than two hundred thousand predominately African-American
9 college educated women; and
10 WHEREAS, it is comprised of over nine hundred chapters located in the United
11 States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti,
12 the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and
13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority uses its Five-Point Program Thrust of
14 Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and
15 Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement to
16 uplift, encourage, and develop the global community; and
17 WHEREAS, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority stand on the shoulders of
18 giants, such as Senator Diana E. Bajoie, Representative Renee Gill Pratt, Representative
19 Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, Representative Rosalind Peychaud, Representative Jalila
20 Jefferson Bullock, Senator Cheryl Gray Evans, and Senator Karen Carter Peterson who have
21 left an incredible imprint on this state's history; and
22 WHEREAS, on this Red and White Day, the sorority honors and celebrates one of
23 its members who has made a major impact on the state in true Delta fashion and proven
24 herself as a notable leader in the state of Louisiana and the country; The Honorable Diana
25 E. Bajoie, the first woman to take the oath as the President Pro Tempore of the Louisiana
26 State Senate; and
27 WHEREAS, the sorority will be joined by Mayor President Sharon Weston Broome
28 who will serve as the keynote Red and White Day speaker and will assist the members in
29 congratulating this outstanding woman.
30 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana

1 does hereby recognize Thursday, June 1, 2017, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated's
2 Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature, does hereby commend the women of Delta
3 Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for their exceptional achievements and manifold
4 contributions, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation to the organization and its
5 members for the tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their local communities, the
6 state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
8 president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to the
9 regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
