SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 201

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Scoliosis Research Society, recognize the unwavering commitment to
excellence in service, and designate June 2017 as National Scoliosis Awareness
Month at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine with no known cause
(idiopathic), is a condition affecting two to three percent of the population, or an estimated
seven million people in the United States and is a condition which strikes without regard to
gender, race, age, or economic status; and
WHEREAS, an estimated one million scoliosis patients utilize healthcare annually,
with approximately one of every six children being diagnosed with this condition eventually
being required to receive active medical treatment; and
WHEREAS, the primary age of onset for scoliosis is between ten and fifteen with
females being five times more likely to progress to a curve magnitude that requires
treatment; and
WHEREAS, screening programs allow for early detection, and for treatment
opportunities which may alleviate the worst effects of the condition; and
WHEREAS, there is a need to increase the public's awareness of scoliosis and help
children, parents, adults, and healthcare providers understand, recognize, and treat the
complexities of spinal deformities such as Scoliosis.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend the members of the Scoliosis Research Society for their outstanding
achievements; does hereby recognize and record for posterity their unwavering commitment
to excellence in service to the citizens of the state; does hereby extend enduring appreciation
for the pride and honor they bring to Louisiana; and does hereby designate June 2017 as
National Scoliosis Awareness Month at the state capitol.
