SLS 17RS-385 ORIGINAL 2017 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 54 BY SENATOR ERDEY CONDOLENCES. Expresses condolences upon the death of East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office Sergeant Shawn Thomas Anderson who was killed in the line of duty. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the 3 passing of Sergeant Shawn Thomas Anderson of the East Baton Rouge Parish 4 Sheriff's Office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and also to commend a life well-spent 5 in service to his community, state, and nation. 6 WHEREAS, condolences are hereby extended to the family, friends, and fellowship 7 of law enforcement personnel who loved and admired Shawn Thomas Anderson for his 8 dedication to professional excellence and for the Christian values that he upheld; and 9 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson was a kind and honorable man of great courage, a 10 public servant of the highest caliber, who was among those first-responders, those chosen 11 few who unselfishly place themselves in harm's way to assure the safety of others, the 12 preservation of the peace, and the enforcement of the law; and 13 WHEREAS, on March 18, 2017, Sergeant Shawn Anderson succumbed to injuries 14 encountered in the line of duty and departed this life at the age of forty-three; even so, his 15 legacy of twenty years of exemplary public service to the people of the parish of East Baton 16 Rouge and state of Louisiana who he had served so well, shall remain forever in their 17 memories; and 18 WHEREAS, a 1992 graduate of Baker High School, Shawn was a student-athlete Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 54 SLS 17RS-385 ORIGINAL 1 who excelled in baseball; and 2 WHEREAS, Shawn Anderson bravely served his country in the United States Army 3 as a specialist in ordnance and rocket artillery assigned to Multiple Launch Rocket Systems 4 at the Fort Sill Army Post in Oklahoma; and 5 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson shall be remembered as a motivator who shared his 6 expertise with his co-workers, placing particular emphasis on the credo of "to protect and 7 serve"; he was always "on the job," twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, and 8 well-respected by his peers; and 9 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson began his service with the Sheriff's Office at the 10 East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and went on to serve in various divisions that included 11 Narcotics, Emergency Services Unit, Maritime Response, Canine Unit, and as an elite 12 member of the SWAT team for eleven years; and 13 WHEREAS, he worked Uniform Patrol with his fellow deputies at the Burbank, 14 Scotlandville, and Kleinpeter substations; and 15 WHEREAS, during his tenure at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, he received 16 recognition for meritorious service that included a Life Saving Award in 2010, emergency 17 delivery of an infant in 2016, and service of more than sixty high-risk arrest warrants in 18 2013; and 19 WHEREAS, a resident of Walker, Louisiana; Shawn Anderson was an avid sports 20 fan who enjoyed following LSU Tiger football and the Dallas Cowboys; as an attentive 21 husband and father, Shawn experienced immense pride watching his children compete in 22 sports activities; and 23 WHEREAS, at his funeral Sergeant Shawn Thomas Anderson was honored on behalf 24 of a grateful nation with an honor guard of fellow officers and a processional of brothers and 25 sisters of The Thin Blue Line who paid homage to their fallen comrade and escorted him to 26 his final resting place at Shiloh Baptist Church in Pine Grove; and 27 WHEREAS, preceded in death by his father, Jack Anderson, Shawn is survived by 28 his loving wife Becky Davis Anderson, and their two children, Delaney Grace and Breland 29 Thomas; his mother Carol Anderson Bergeron, brother Jackie Anderson and wife, Stefanie; 30 his brothers Dustin Martin and Bruce Anderson; his sisters Debbie Anderson, Paula Ledford, Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 54 SLS 17RS-385 ORIGINAL 1 Renee Anderson, and Kristin Martin, along with extended family and countless friends; and 2 WHEREAS, to his comrades-in-arms, Sergeant Shawn Anderson is now 10-7; he is 3 at the End of Watch; and he has gone to his heavenly home to be at peace with his Lord and 4 under the eternal protection of St. Michael, patron saint of law enforcement and The Thin 5 Blue Line. 6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 7 does hereby extend sincere condolences to the family, friends, and fellow law enforcement 8 officers of Sergeant Shawn Thomas Anderson of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's 9 Office, who died in the line of duty on March 18, 2017. 10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does 11 hereby note the dedication of Sergeant Shawn Thomas Anderson to the noble calling of law 12 enforcement, his character and humanity, and his sacrifice, and to make evident the enduring 13 appreciation and gratitude of the people of East Baton Rouge Parish, the state of Louisiana, 14 and the nation. 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to his 16 widow, Becky Anderson.
