SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 92
BY SENATOR WALSWORTH 
SENATE.  Designates May 8 - 12, 2017, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week in Louisiana.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To designate May 8 - 12, 2017, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week in Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, charter schools, by law, are independent, tuition-free public schools of
4 choice that are given greater educational and operational autonomy in exchange for the
5 state's highest level of performance-based accountability; and 
6 WHEREAS, charter schools increase learning opportunities for all pupils and provide
7 parents and students with expanded choices within the public school system; and
8 WHEREAS, Louisiana has been a responsible partner in improving its public school
9 system to offer a competitive public education; and
10 WHEREAS, a first-class education prepares children to love lifelong learning and
11 develop the skills which enable them to participate in the technologically advanced global
12 economy; and
13 WHEREAS, Louisiana public charter schools have brought forth new ideas,
14 enthusiasm, and strength to its public school system and helped enact one of the top ten
15 strongest charter school laws in the nation; and
16 WHEREAS, in the past twelve years, Louisiana has seen more than an eight-fold
17 increase in the number of operating charter schools and a thirty percent increase over the
18 past two years in the number of students attending those schools resulting in Louisiana now

1 hosting approximately seventy-eight thousand children in its one hundred forty-five public
2 charter schools; and 
3 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana joins the Louisiana Association of Public Charter
4 Schools in celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of charter schools to public
5 education; and
6 WHEREAS, Louisiana charter schools ensure students have access to a high quality
7 public school education regardless of race, socioeconomic status, academic proficiency,
8 special need, or personal circumstance.
9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
10 does hereby designate May 8 - 12, 2017, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week in Louisiana.
