SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 96
BY SENATOR CARTER 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Edna Karr High School on its many accomplishments.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Edna Karr High School on its many accomplishments.
3 WHEREAS, Edna Karr Junior High School opened on February 3, 1964, and quickly
4 established itself as the premier public secondary school on the Westbank of Orleans Parish;
5 and
6 WHEREAS, excelling in academics, athletics, and an unprecedented range of
7 extracurricular activities, Edna Karr soon proved that its motto "Second to None" was more
8 than mere rhetoric; and
9 WHEREAS, "Second to None" became a challenge to each group of incoming
10 students to uphold and further Edna Karr's burgeoning reputation for excellence, and they
11 have; and
12 WHEREAS, recognizing the increasing need for a dedicated, college preparatory
13 public high school on the Westbank, the Orleans Parish School Board in May 1990,
14 designated Edna Karr as a magnet school and charged the administration, faculty, and
15 community to embrace the new challenge; and
16 WHEREAS, with the addition of grades ten, eleven, and twelve over the next three
17 years, accompanied by appropriate changes in curriculum and services, Edna Karr
18 Secondary School proudly graduated its first senior class in May 1993; and

1 WHEREAS, in May 2000, Edna Karr High School was honored by the United States
2 Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence; and
3 WHEREAS, in May 2005, Edna Karr High School was honored again as a Blue
4 Ribbon School of Excellence; and 
5 WHEREAS, Edna Karr High School is one of only a few schools nationwide to have
6 won the prestigious award twice; and 
7 WHEREAS, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Edna Karr High School was one
8 of the first schools to reopen in the city of New Orleans; and 
9 WHEREAS, as a part of the Algiers Charter Schools Association, Edna Karr
10 reopened as an open access college preparatory high school, accepting students from all over
11 Orleans Parish with an open admissions policy; and
12 WHEREAS, beginning in 2013, Edna Karr High School became a founding school
13 as part of InspireNOLA Charter Schools; and 
14 WHEREAS, after over fifty years of service to the children of New Orleans, Edna
15 Karr High School continues to expand its reputation for excellence by attracting the best
16 students and teachers, continuing to provide quality education, and instilling in all the desire
17 to succeed. 
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
19 does hereby commend and congratulate Edna Karr High School on its many
20 accomplishments.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mr.
22 Harold Clay Jr., Head of School of Edna Karr High School.
