Expresses condolences on the death of Gus Mijalis. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the 3 passing of Shreveport businessman, Gus Mijalis, who was an influential force in 4 local and state politics during the last half of the Twentieth Century. 5 WHEREAS, it is with great sadness that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 6 has learned of the passing of this man of such great wit and fortitude, who lived his life to 7 the fullest extent possible; and 8 WHEREAS, Gus Mijalis was a larger than life figure who possessed a quick smile 9 and a lively demeanor; he was a vibrant man who never met a stranger; he was diligent and 10 hard working with a gentle heart; and 11 WHEREAS, Gus was a true individual with a courageous spirit whose loyalty never 12 wavered; he was the close personal friend of former Governor Edwin W. Edwards and many 13 of the other "movers and shakers" in the state's political spectrum at that time; and 14 WHEREAS, he was a man of vision and he helped to spearhead funding for 15 infrastructure and public works which resulted in extensive roadway development that 16 encircled the city of Shreveport; those transportation improvements were a vital component 17 in the economic expansion of local and regional commerce; and 18 WHEREAS, born June 11, 1934, to parents Sam Alex and Evangeline Mijalis, Gus Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 7 SLS 181ES-139 ORIGINAL 1 attended public school and later graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in civil 2 engineering; and 3 WHEREAS, Gus Mijalis was involved in several enterprises that experienced steady 4 growth and in 1997, he joined the family-owned business, Farmer's Seafood Company, Inc.; 5 and in 2018, the company proudly marked its one hundredth anniversary; and 6 WHEREAS, handing the reins over to his nephew, John Mijalis, Gus did not take 7 retirement too seriously, he still worked five or six days a week without much thought of 8 retirement; and 9 WHEREAS, on February 27, 2018, surrounded by loved ones, Gus Mijalis passed 10 from this life to his eternal rest; and 11 WHEREAS, Gus Mijalis has left an indelible mark on the Ark-La-Tex region and 12 whether his fortunes were "boom or bust", he always faced life with a smile; and 13 WHEREAS, Gus Mijalis met the challenges of life head-on with zeal and candor 14 tempered with an immense love of family. 15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 16 does hereby express the sincere condolences upon the passing of Gus Mijalis, Shreveport 17 businessman and political dynamo. 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 19 family of Gus Mijalis.
