HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 22

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the Notre Dame High School girls' softball team on
winning the 2018 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division III state
championship
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend the Notre Dame High School girls' softball team on winning the 2018
3 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division III state championship.
4 WHEREAS, the Notre Dame Lady Pioneers claimed the Division III state
5championship with a 7-4 victory over the Holy Savior Menard Eagles; and
6 WHEREAS, the Lady Pios scored five unanswered runs, plating four runs in the
7fourth and another in the fifth inning to win their first state championship since 2010; and
8 WHEREAS, this win marks Notre Dame's third title in school history; and
9 WHEREAS, the team, which includes seven seniors,  finished their season with a 21-
104 record; and
11 WHEREAS, the Lady Pios overcame adversity on the road to the championship, with
12two seniors missing significant time during the season due to injuries; and
13 WHEREAS, senior Marcella Gossen returned from surgery the previous week to
14pitch the final three outs in the championship game; and
15 WHEREAS, the Lady Pios made twelve hits in the game, including four from junior
16Makenzie Abshire, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player; and
17 WHEREAS, the Lady Pios have been steadily working towards winning the
18championship; they were eliminated in the quarterfinals in 2015 and the semifinals in 2016
19before losing the 2017 Division III title game against Calvary Baptist; and

1 WHEREAS, the state championship was won by the Lady Pios through the hard
2work and dedication of team members Makenzie Abshire, Riley Adams, Morgan Alleman,
3Jillian Bourgeois, Mary Kate Bourgeois, Katie Brouillette, Ellen Brown, Maria Brown, Amy
4Daigle, Marcella Gossen, Melise Gossen, Anna Gotte, Abby Higginbotham, Maddie Link,
5Haley Maloz, Maddie Miller, Sydnei Simon, Kennedy Smith, and Bailey Thevis, who
6deserve merit and recognition for their outstanding performances; and
7 WHEREAS, the amazing accomplishments of the team could not have been achieved
8without the leadership of head coach Ashley Ray and assistant coach Brittany St. Pierre, who
9have instilled in the players the necessary skills to become great softball players and
10outstanding members in their community by demonstrating motivational leadership to
11produce winners on and off the field.
12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
13Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Notre Dame High School girls' softball
14team on winning the 2018 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division III state
15championship; and does hereby recognize the team's outstanding performance and the pride
16and honor they have brought to their school and community.
17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
18to head coach Ashley Ray.
