Designates June 1, 2018, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To declare June 1, 2018, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. 3 WHEREAS, this Resolution declares June 1, 2018, to be National Gun Violence 4 Awareness Day in the state of Louisiana to honor and remember all victims and survivors 5 of gun violence and to declare that we as a country must do more to reduce gun violence. 6 WHEREAS, every day, 96 Americans are killed by gun violence and countless others 7 are injured; and 8 WHEREAS, Americans are more than 25 times more likely to be murdered with 9 guns than people in other developed countries; and 10 WHEREAS, among legislators' highest responsibilities is protecting public safety in 11 the communities in which they serve; and 12 WHEREAS, support for Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens goes 13 hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from dangerous people; and 14 WHEREAS, June 2, 2018, would have been the 21st birthday of Hadiya Pendleton, 15 a teenager who marched in President Obama's second inaugural parade and was tragically 16 shot and killed just weeks later; and 17 WHEREAS, to help honor Hadiya and the 96 Americans whose lives are cut short 18 daily as well as the countless survivors who are injured by shootings every day, a national Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 12 SLS 182ES-64 ORIGINAL 1 coalition of organizations has designated June l, 2018, as the fourth annual National Gun 2 Violence Awareness Day; and 3 WHEREAS, the idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya's friends who asked their 4 classmates to commemorate her life by wearing orange; they chose this color because 5 hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods, and 6 orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life; and 7 WHEREAS, anyone can join this campaign by pledging to wear orange on June first 8 to help raise awareness about gun violence; and 9 WHEREAS, by celebrating Wear Orange Weekend from June 1-3 and wearing 10 orange on June first, Americans will raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives 11 and lost human potential of Americans stolen by gun violence; and 12 WHEREAS, we renew our commitment to reduce gun violence and pledge to do all 13 we can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands, and encourage responsible gun ownership 14 to help keep our children safe. 15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 16 does hereby declare June 1, 2018, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all Louisiana citizens are encouraged to support 18 their communities' efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and 19 value human lives.
