SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 24
BY SENATORS JOHNS, MORRISH AND JOHN SMITH 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Jackson William Stine upon the celebration of his 100
th
birthday.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Jackson William "J.W." Stine on the historic and memorable occasion of his
3 one hundredth birthday.
4 WHEREAS, Jackson William "J.W." Stine was born to Sulphur residents Andrew
5 Stine and Elma Landry Stine on July 22, 1918, and attended Sulphur High School where he
6 played quarterback for four years; and 
7 WHEREAS, he attended Normal College (today Northwestern State University) on
8 a football scholarship and also loved the sport of boxing and being a Golden Gloves
9 boxer; and 
10 WHEREAS, J.W. married his high school sweetheart, Doris (Dee Dee) Drost on
11 January 14, 1944, just before he was sent overseas to fight for his country in
12 World War II; and
13 WHEREAS, they remained married for sixty-seven happy years until his wife's
14 passing in 2011; together they raised seven children; six sons and one daughter; Richard,
15 Gary, Janie, Jay, Dennis, David, and Tim, and J.W. also has thirty-one grandchildren and
16 seventy-one great-grandchildren; and
17 WHEREAS, J.W. instilled the core values of faith, family, and community in his
18 seven children and he is the proud father of an accomplished and nationally known artist, a

1 colonel in the Air Force, a captain in the National Guard, two former state legislators, a
2 former commissioner of administration, past president of Greater Beauregard Chamber of
3 Commerce, past McNeese State University Foundation president, past chairman of the Boy
4 Scouts of America Calcasieu Area Council, past chairman of the Council for a Better
5 Louisiana, a current member of the Christus Health System Board, and current chairman of
6 Louisiana Association of Business and Industry; and 
7 WHEREAS, J.W. joined the United States Army Air Corps (the predecessor to
8 today's United States Air Force) in 1944, achieved the rank of captain, and flew over fifty
9 combat missions as a pilot of a B-26 aircraft over Germany, Italy, and France; and 
10 WHEREAS, J.W. and his best friend J.C. Carlin opened a construction company in
11 Sulphur after World War II and then a lumber company to supply the construction company
12 which was called Starlin Lumber; J.W. eventually bought out J.C.'s share and changed the
13 name in 1973 to Stine Lumber and all of J.W.s six sons joined the company; and
14 WHEREAS, Stine Lumber Company has been headquartered in Sulphur for
15 seventy-two years and now employs over eight hundred associates and has ten locations in
16 Louisiana and one in Natchez, Mississippi, with annual sales of over two hundred million
17 dollars; and
18 WHEREAS, J.W. has been a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic
19 Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion for many years, and in 1989,
20 he was awarded Citizen of the Year in the Diocese of Lake Charles; and
21 WHEREAS, J.W. Stine will celebrate his one hundredth birthday with family and
22 friends on Sunday, July 22, 2018; and
23 WHEREAS, for one hundred years, J.W. Stine has distinguished himself as an
24 exemplary and highly admired citizen of Louisiana; and
25 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,
26 and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon people like
27 J.W. Stine, an exceptional man and an inspiration to all; and
28 WHEREAS, J.W. Stine merits a special measure of commendation for the
29 tremendous honor that he brings to his family, friends, community, the state of Louisiana,
30 and all who know and love him.

1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
2 does hereby commend Jackson William "J.W." Stine on the historic and memorable occasion
3 of his one hundredth birthday celebration, does hereby recognize and record for posterity the
4 extraordinary life he has lived in the century since his birth, and does hereby extend to him
5 every good wish for health and happiness in the future.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
7 J.W. Stine.
