HLS 183ES-127 ORIGINAL 2018 Third Extraordinary Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 10 BY REPRESENTATIVES EDMONDS AND FOIL VETERANS: Requests that state governmental offices honor the sacrifices of Louisiana veterans from World War I on November 11, 2018, the 100 th anniversary of Armistice Day, now known as Veterans Day 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend the sacrifices of Louisiana veterans made during World War I and to urge and 3 request the offices of Louisiana state government to honor those veterans on 4 November 11, 2018. 5 WHEREAS, the First World War commenced in 1914 involving nations from around 6the globe; and 7 WHEREAS, the United States of America was a reluctant participant and entered the 8war in 1917; and 9 WHEREAS, the armed forces of the United States demonstrated extraordinary 10gallantry and tenacity in the defeat of the enemy and exhibited this nation's emergence as a 11world power; and 12 WHEREAS, the enemy capitulated and all sides agreed to an armistice to begin at 1311:11 a.m., November 11, 1918; and 14 WHEREAS, the war resulted in nearly 18 million deaths, both military and civilian; 15and 16 WHEREAS, nearly 117,000 American lives were lost in the war, of which nearly 171,500 were from Louisiana; and 18 WHEREAS, in a span of about one year, 319 of Louisianians were killed in action, 19with an additional 1,155 deaths from wounds, disease, and other causes. For perspective, 20887 of her sons were lost during service in the Vietnam War from 1965-1972; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 183ES-127 ORIGINAL HR NO. 10 1 WHEREAS, The American Legion was created by veterans of World War I and its 2members constructed and dedicated Memorial Tower on the campus of Louisiana State 3University in 1926 as a reminder of Louisiana's lost sons and daughters from that war; and 4 WHEREAS, November 11, 2018, marks the 100 th anniversary of Armistice Day, now 5known as Veterans Day, marking the end of hostilities of World War I. With little doubt, 6WWI was the single most transformative event of the 20th century. It changed the world, 7and it changed Louisiana. 8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the House of Representatives of the Legislature 9of Louisiana does hereby honor the sacrifices of Louisiana's veterans from World War I, and 10urges and requests the offices of state government to honor those veterans on November 11, 112018. 12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the 100 th anniversary of Armistice Day, now 13known as Veterans Day, is an occasion to remember and honor the sacrifices of the men and 14women who have served Louisiana and the nation throughout its history. It is a time to 15pause, reflect, and rededicate ourselves to the cause of peace by remembering the costs of 16freedom and peace.
