Commends Lillyanne Brignac on being selected as a candidate to represent Louisiana at the HOBY World Leadership Congress. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend Lillyanne Brignac on being selected as a candidate to represent Louisiana at 3 the Hugh O'Brian Youth World Leadership Congress slated for July 21 through 28, 4 2018, at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. 5 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership program was established 6 in 1958 by the popular Hollywood film actor, Hugh O'Brian, after he spent nine inspirational 7 days in Africa with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and humanitarian, Dr. Albert Schweitzer; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, following his visit with Dr. Schweitzer, Hugh O'Brian returned to Los 10 Angeles, California, and established an international organization designed to encourage 11 young people to take a leadership role in society and to become catalysts for change; and 12 WHEREAS, the mission of HOBY is to inspire and develop the global community 13 of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation and 14 scholarships are awarded to American and international students; and 15 WHEREAS, Lillyanne Brignac, daughter of Aimee Ortego and Rusty Brignac, 16 attended the 2018 Louisiana Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar; and 17 WHEREAS, the Louisiana HOBY Leadership program hosted one hundred and forty 18 high school sophomores, one of whom was Lillyanne Brignac, who represented their Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 23 SLS 183ES-44 ORIGINAL 1 respective high schools throughout the state of Louisiana; and 2 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brien Youth World Leadership Congress is held every year 3 and brings together over four hundred young leaders from the United States, Puerto Rico, 4 and an additional eleven countries for a week-long intensive, educational leadership 5 conference; and 6 WHEREAS, the purpose of the World Leadership Congress is to provide young 7 HOBY leaders with an opportunity to learn firsthand about other cultures and opinions, form 8 friendships, exchange ideas in an environment where they can feel comfortable in open 9 discussion with their peers, and learn to voice how they have shaped and formed their own 10 views about the role of leadership in society; and 11 WHEREAS, Hugh O'Brian believed the most important thing in education is to teach 12 young people to think for themselves and the more than four hundred and seventy-five 13 thousand HOBY alumni demonstrate how this belief has influenced and inspired young 14 people to become more involved in their communities and Lillyanne Brignac will have the 15 chance to participate in the world conference and learn these lessons for herself; and 16 WHEREAS, being selected as a candidate to represent Louisiana at the HOBY World 17 Leadership Congress is a matter of great pride and honor which Lillyanne Brignac has 18 brought to her family, friends, school, community, and state. 19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 20 does hereby commend Lillyanne Brignac on her selection as a candidate to represent 21 Louisiana at the 2018 Hugh O'Brian Youth World Leadership Congress in Chicago, Illinois. 22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 23 Lillyanne Brignac and Ms. Dawn Shipp, principal of Sacred Heart High School in Ville 24 Platte, Louisiana.
