VETERANS:  Requires the office of vital records to share data regarding veterans
1	AN ACT
2To enact R.S. 40:41(L), relative to vital records disclosure; to provide for the disclosure of
3 certain vital records to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs; to provide
4 for the duties of the state registrar in disclosure of records; and to provide for related
5 matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1.  R.S. 40:41(L) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 
8 ยง41.  Disclosure of records

10	L.(1)  For the purpose of determining the eligibility of a person to participate
11 in veterans' benefits, upon written request, the state registrar shall issue a certified
12 copy of a death certificate to a representative from the United States Department of
13 Veterans Affairs. The written request from the United States Department of Veterans
14 Affairs, howsoever transmitted, shall constitute sufficient proof for release of the
15 certificate.
16	(2)  The state registrar may submit data related to deaths of veterans directly
17 to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs for the purpose of determining
18 the eligibility of veterans benefits.

Abstract:  Requires upon written request that the state registrar release death certificates of
veterans to the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs for veterans benefit determinations.
Present law provides for the disclosure of vital records.
Proposed law retains present law.
Proposed law requires the state registrar to provide certain vital records to the U.S. Dept. of
Veterans Affairs upon written request for the purpose of determining veterans' benefits.
 
Proposed law adds that the state registrar of vital records may submit data related to deaths
of veterans directly to the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs in determining the eligibility of
veterans benefits.
Proposed law makes technical corrections.
