HLS 18RS-3478 ORIGINAL 2018 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 150 BY REPRESENTATIVE FOIL COMMENDATIONS: Commends Pennington Biomedical Research Center on its thirtieth anniversary 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend Pennington Biomedical Research Center on its thirtieth anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Center 4began with a vision of the late Louisiana philanthropist Claude B. "Doc" Pennington to build 5the biggest and best nutritional research facility in the nation, a vision supported by the 6generous donation of Claude B. and Irene Pennington; and 7 WHEREAS, by 1989, Pennington Biomedical had signed a $3.5 million research 8agreement with the U.S. Army, and over its three decades, the center has secured more than 9$80 million to conduct one hundred thirty research studies for the U.S. Department of 10Defense and continues to meet the nutritional needs of our nation's soldiers; and 11 WHEREAS, through research that includes collaborative efforts with public and 12private institutions and that is designed to enhance Louisiana's research infrastructure, the 13faculty and staff of Pennington Biomedical continue to work toward its mission "to discover 14the triggers of chronic diseases through innovative research that improves human health 15across the lifespan"; and 16 WHEREAS, the research faculty at Pennington Biomedical rank among the world's 17research elite, annually winning major competitive grants to fund their work, with each 18faculty member bringing in an average of six hundred thirty thousand dollars annually; and 19 WHEREAS, over the span of three decades, the state of Louisiana has appropriated 20$257 million for Pennington Biomedical's basic operating expenses and Pennington Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 150 HLS 18RS-3478 ORIGINAL 1Biomedical faculty members have generated $826 million in extramural funding, making 2Pennington Biomedical an economic engine for the state of Louisiana; and 3 WHEREAS, Pennington Biomedical's research findings are among the most quoted 4in scientific literature; and 5 WHEREAS, Pennington Biomedical is a world-renowned institution with ongoing 6clinical research trials that involve Louisiana participants and that test ground-breaking new 7treatments for obesity and diabetes; Pennington Biomedical has participated in the 8development of medications within every class of pharmaceuticals available to treat 9diabetes, which is an epidemic in Louisiana; and 10 WHEREAS, 2018 marks Pennington Biomedical Research Center's thirtieth 11anniversary; it is appropriate to acknowledge the history of this Louisiana resource as faculty 12and staff continue their dedicated work to achieve "Doc" Pennington's vision. 13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the many accomplishments of Pennington 15Biomedical Research Center during its thirty years of service and does hereby publicly 16document profound gratitude of the House of Representatives to Claude B. and Irene 17Pennington for their generous philanthropy which established Pennington Biomedical 18Research Center and continues to support this world-class research facility. 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 20to the executive director of LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
