ENROLLED 2018 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 150 BY REPRESENTATIVE FOIL A RESOLUTION To commend Pennington Biomedical Research Center on its thirtieth anniversary. WHEREAS, Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Center began with a vision of the late Louisiana philanthropist Claude B. "Doc" Pennington to build the biggest and best nutritional research facility in the nation, a vision supported by the generous donation of Claude B. and Irene Pennington; and WHEREAS, by 1989, Pennington Biomedical had signed a $3.5 million research agreement with the U.S. Army, and over its three decades, the center has secured more than $80 million to conduct one hundred thirty research studies for the U.S. Department of Defense and continues to meet the nutritional needs of our nation's soldiers; and WHEREAS, through research that includes collaborative efforts with public and private institutions and that is designed to enhance Louisiana's research infrastructure, the faculty and staff of Pennington Biomedical continue to work toward its mission "to discover the triggers of chronic diseases through innovative research that improves human health across the lifespan"; and WHEREAS, the research faculty at Pennington Biomedical rank among the world's research elite, annually winning major competitive grants to fund their work, with each faculty member bringing in an average of six hundred thirty thousand dollars annually; and WHEREAS, over the span of three decades, the state of Louisiana has appropriated $257 million for Pennington Biomedical's basic operating expenses and Pennington Biomedical faculty members have generated $826 million in extramural funding, making Pennington Biomedical an economic engine for the state of Louisiana; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 150 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Pennington Biomedical's research findings are among the most quoted in scientific literature; and WHEREAS, Pennington Biomedical is a world-renowned institution with ongoing clinical research trials that involve Louisiana participants and that test ground-breaking new treatments for obesity and diabetes; Pennington Biomedical has participated in the development of medications within every class of pharmaceuticals available to treat diabetes, which is an epidemic in Louisiana; and WHEREAS, 2018 marks Pennington Biomedical Research Center's thirtieth anniversary; it is appropriate to acknowledge the history of this Louisiana resource as faculty and staff continue their dedicated work to achieve "Doc" Pennington's vision. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the many accomplishments of Pennington Biomedical Research Center during its thirty years of service and does hereby publicly document profound gratitude of the House of Representatives to Claude B. and Irene Pennington for their generous philanthropy which established Pennington Biomedical Research Center and continues to support this world-class research facility. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the executive director of LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
