Church Day in the Louisiana House of Representatives 1 A RESOLUTION 2To recognize Wednesday, April 4, 2018, as Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church Day in the 3 Louisiana House of Representatives. 4 WHEREAS, the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church was founded by 5Richard Allen in 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a correctional church; and 6 WHEREAS, the word "African" means that the church was organized by people of 7African descent and heritage; it does not mean that the church was founded in Africa or that 8it is for persons of African descent only; and 9 WHEREAS, the roots of A.M.E. churches are in the family of Methodist churches; 10Methodism provides an orderly system of rules and regulations and places emphasis on a 11plain and simple Gospel; and 12 WHEREAS, "Episcopal" refers to the form of government under which the church 13operates; the chief executive and administrative officers of the African Methodist Episcopal 14denomination are the bishops of the church; and 15 WHEREAS, the A.M.E. Church has more than one million members across the 16United States, Canada, South America, West Africa, South Africa, and the West Indies; and 17 WHEREAS, the Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church of Napoleonville, Louisiana, was 18organized in 1869, and was named after the Reverend J.J. Nelson; and 19 WHEREAS, Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church is located within the boundaries of the 20Eighth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church and within the Alexandria-Thibodaux 21Presiding Elder District. Church Day in the Louisiana House of Representatives. 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that suitable copies of this Resolution be transmitted 5to the Right Reverend Julius Harrison McAllister, Sr., presiding bishop of the Eighth 6Episcopal District, and the Reverend Gwendolyn E.
