SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes March 28, 2018, as Southern University Day
at the state capitol
1 A RESOLUTION
2To recognize Wednesday, March 28, 2018, as Southern University Day at the state capitol.
3 WHEREAS, first chartered in April 1880, Southern University recently celebrated
4its one hundred thirty-eighth year of providing opportunities for students from all walks of
5life to achieve a high-quality and global educational experience; and
6 WHEREAS, the Southern University System is the only historically black college
7and university (HBCU) system in the country, and includes Southern University at New
8Orleans, Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, Southern University
9Law Center, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and Southern
10University at Shreveport; and
11 WHEREAS, Southern University serves its diverse student body by nurturing
12students so that they can become future leaders and distinguish themselves as entrepreneurs,
13visionaries, collaborators, and lifelong learners capable of contributing to the global
14workforce; and
15 WHEREAS, Southern University embraces the land-grant principle that is part of the
16university's core identity and in so doing, effects change both inside and outside the
17university community; and
18 WHEREAS, Southern University is a trailblazer within the HBCU community and
19boasts a global network of thousands of successful alumni representing various professions,
20all of whom make significant and positive contributions to society in both the public and
21private sectors, including twenty-three members of the Louisiana Legislature; and

1 WHEREAS, Southern University is an invaluable asset to the city of Baton Rouge,
2the state of Louisiana, the United States of America, and the world, and serves as a vital
3economic engine for the community, generating substantial economic returns year after year;
4and
5 WHEREAS, Southern University is dedicated to meaningful public service and
6community engagement and expresses this dedication through meaningful partnerships and
7projects that help to improve the civic life of the communities that it serves; and
8 WHEREAS, the Southern University Board of Supervisors is vested with the
9responsibility for the management and supervision of the institutions of higher education,
10statewide agricultural programs, and other programs that comprise the Southern University
11System; and
12 WHEREAS, Southern University's mission is aligned with the Board of Regents'
13commitment to "Elevate Louisiana!", and the university vigorously pursues this mission by
14using education to improve lives, create a strong workforce, and build Louisiana's economy.
15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
16Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, March 28, 2018, as Southern
17University Day at the state capitol and does hereby express gratitude to the administration,
18faculty, and students of Southern University for their invaluable contributions to the great
19state of Louisiana.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
21to the president of the Southern University System.
