HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 47
BY REPRESENTATIVE CARPENTER
A RESOLUTION
To recognize Wednesday, March 28, 2018, as Southern University Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, first chartered in April 1880, Southern University recently celebrated
its one hundred thirty-eighth year of providing opportunities for students from all walks of
life to achieve a high-quality and global educational experience; and
WHEREAS, the Southern University System is the only historically black college
and university (HBCU) system in the country, and includes Southern University at New
Orleans, Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, Southern University
Law Center, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and Southern
University at Shreveport; and
WHEREAS, Southern University serves its diverse student body by nurturing
students so that they can become future leaders and distinguish themselves as entrepreneurs,
visionaries, collaborators, and lifelong learners capable of contributing to the global
workforce; and
WHEREAS, Southern University embraces the land-grant principle that is part of the
university's core identity and in so doing, effects change both inside and outside the
university community; and
WHEREAS, Southern University is a trailblazer within the HBCU community and
boasts a global network of thousands of successful alumni representing various professions,
all of whom make significant and positive contributions to society in both the public and
private sectors, including twenty-three members of the Louisiana Legislature; and
WHEREAS, Southern University is an invaluable asset to the city of Baton Rouge,
the state of Louisiana, the United States of America, and the world, and serves as a vital

economic engine for the community, generating substantial economic returns year after year;
and
WHEREAS, Southern University is dedicated to meaningful public service and
community engagement and expresses this dedication through meaningful partnerships and
projects that help to improve the civic life of the communities that it serves; and
WHEREAS, the Southern University Board of Supervisors is vested with the
responsibility for the management and supervision of the institutions of higher education,
statewide agricultural programs, and other programs that comprise the Southern University
System; and
WHEREAS, Southern University's mission is aligned with the Board of Regents'
commitment to "Elevate Louisiana!", and the university vigorously pursues this mission by
using education to improve lives, create a strong workforce, and build Louisiana's economy.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, March 28, 2018, as Southern
University Day at the state capitol and does hereby express gratitude to the administration,
faculty, and students of Southern University for their invaluable contributions to the great
state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the president of the Southern University System.
