ENROLLED 2018 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 75 BY REPRESENTATIVE GREGORY MILLER A RESOLUTION To commend Country Music Television, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, and Louisiana Calling on the Empowering Education Tour that included eight tour stops and featured Louisiana native and rising country music star, Courtney Cole. WHEREAS, the Country Music Television (CMT) Empowering Education Tour is a multi-faceted partnership that aims to increase the number of work-ready residents in rural communities; CMT Empowering Education is a comprehensive educational campaign that provides both an online resource and on-the-ground support to aid prospective students in overcoming obstacles to furthering education; the initiative is founded on education research and insights through a partnership between Viacom and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and WHEREAS, Louisiana has unprecedented demand for skilled workers throughout the state, and positions such workers would fill often require training or education beyond a high school diploma; in 2017, CMT, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS), and Louisiana Calling committed to work alongside community and technical colleges in a statewide campaign to connect Louisianans with the many available opportunities for workforce training and education in their communities; and WHEREAS, each of the eight schools selected as tour stops was chosen based on demonstrated need and the potential for how this partnership could make a positive impact in the community surrounding the school; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 75 ENROLLED WHEREAS, CMT's tour stopped at Baton Rouge Community College, Bossier Parish Community College, Central Louisiana Technical Community College, Fletcher Technical Community College, Louisiana Delta Community College, Northshore Technical Community College, River Parishes Community College, Reserve campus, and SOWELA Technical Community College; and WHEREAS, in 2017, Louisiana's community and technical colleges served and provided instruction and workforce training to more than one hundred thirty-one thousand students; the system has more than twenty-four thousand graduates, and more than fifteen thousand of its students have transferred to four-year universities; and WHEREAS, Louisiana Calling’s mission is to help Louisianans discover and appreciate the many educational pathways that lead to the highly valued jobs and sustainable careers that are available in Louisiana today; and WHEREAS, Louisiana native Courtney Cole is one of CMT's "Next Women of Country" and an advocate for education; Courtney returned to her home state in the spring for the tour, performing free concerts at the eight selected community and technical colleges; and WHEREAS, the CMT Empowering Education campaign touched thousands of Louisiana's people and merits a sincere expression of recognition. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the investment in and commitment to the people of Louisiana made by Country Music Television, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, Louisiana Calling, and Courtney Cole through the Empowering Education Tour.
