HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 76

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the Grambling State University women's basketball
team for its outstanding 2017-2018 season
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend the Grambling State University Tigers women's basketball team and staff for
3 an outstanding 2017-2018 season.
4 WHEREAS, the Grambling State University Tigers women's basketball team
5finished the season with a wins-losses record of 19-14 and an incredible 11-2 showing in
6home games and advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association 2018 Division I
7Women's Basketball Championship in Waco, Texas; and
8 WHEREAS, Grambling State earned a berth in the NCAA 2018 Division I Women's
9Basketball Championship for the first time in nearly twenty years after they won the
10Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) women's basketball tournament; they entered
11the SWAC tournament as the No. 3 seed and captured an impressive 72-68 victory over
12cross-state rival Southern University, which catapulted them to the national tournament; and
13 WHEREAS, the 2017-2018 Lady Tigers were led by junior Shakyla Hill, senior
14Monisha Neal, junior Jazmin Boyd, and freshman Justice Coleman in their championship
15run; these athletes made significant contributions to the success of the Grambling State
16University women's basketball program along with teammates Takerra Parsons, Kailyn
17Gideon, Hannah Henderson, Darae Taylor, Alexus Williams, and Ariel Williams; and
18 WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers maintained the highest level of sportsmanship and
19displayed great character in the first round of the NCAA 2018 Division I Women's
20Basketball Championship as they faced No. 2 seed Baylor University in the Lexington
21bracket; and

1 WHEREAS, the exemplary accomplishments of the Lady Tigers could not have been
2achieved without the guidance and skills of Freddie Murray, head coach; assistant coaches
3Isayra Diaz and David Pierre; director of basketball operations, Eumarcus Hicks; Paul
4Bryant, athletics director; and university president, Richard J. Gallot, Jr., all of whom have
5demonstrated the leadership, vision, and motivational skills needed to produce champion
6achievements on the basketball court and in life; and
7 WHEREAS, the talent and determination displayed by the 2017-2018 Grambling
8State University Lady Tigers provided fans with exciting basketball entertainment
9throughout the season, and the athletes and coaches of the Grambling State University
10women's basketball team merit a sincere measure of commendation for their remarkable
11athletic feats and for the honor they have brought to Grambling State University.
12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
13Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the members and staff of the Grambling
14State University women's basketball team for their outstanding achievements during the
152017-2018 season, which included competing in the NCAA 2018 Division I Women's
16Basketball Championship and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous
17pride they have brought to Grambling State University, the University of Louisiana System,
18and the community and state.
19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
20to Head Coach Freddie Murray.
