ENROLLED 2018 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 76 BY REPRESENTATIVE JEFFERSON A RESOLUTION To commend the Grambling State University Tigers women's basketball team and staff for an outstanding 2017-2018 season. WHEREAS, the Grambling State University Tigers women's basketball team finished the season with a wins-losses record of 19-14 and an incredible 11-2 showing in home games and advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association 2018 Division I Women's Basketball Championship in Waco, Texas; and WHEREAS, Grambling State earned a berth in the NCAA 2018 Division I Women's Basketball Championship for the first time in nearly twenty years after they won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) women's basketball tournament; they entered the SWAC tournament as the No. 3 seed and captured an impressive 72-68 victory over cross-state rival Southern University, which catapulted them to the national tournament; and WHEREAS, the 2017-2018 Lady Tigers were led by junior Shakyla Hill, senior Monisha Neal, junior Jazmin Boyd, and freshman Justice Coleman in their championship run; these athletes made significant contributions to the success of the Grambling State University women's basketball program along with teammates Takerra Parsons, Kailyn Gideon, Hannah Henderson, Darae Taylor, Alexus Williams, and Ariel Williams; and WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers maintained the highest level of sportsmanship and displayed great character in the first round of the NCAA 2018 Division I Women's Basketball Championship as they faced No. 2 seed Baylor University in the Lexington bracket; and WHEREAS, the exemplary accomplishments of the Lady Tigers could not have been achieved without the guidance and skills of Freddie Murray, head coach; assistant coaches Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 76 ENROLLED Isayra Diaz and David Pierre; director of basketball operations, Eumarcus Hicks; Paul Bryant, athletics director; and university president, Richard J. Gallot, Jr., all of whom have demonstrated the leadership, vision, and motivational skills needed to produce champion achievements on the basketball court and in life; and WHEREAS, the talent and determination displayed by the 2017-2018 Grambling State University Lady Tigers provided fans with exciting basketball entertainment throughout the season, and the athletes and coaches of the Grambling State University women's basketball team merit a sincere measure of commendation for their remarkable athletic feats and for the honor they have brought to Grambling State University. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the members and staff of the Grambling State University women's basketball team for their outstanding achievements during the 2017-2018 season, which included competing in the NCAA 2018 Division I Women's Basketball Championship and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous pride they have brought to Grambling State University, the University of Louisiana System, and the community and state.
