Present law provides that the sheriff of Vermilion Parish shall pay in full from the sheriff's general
fund certain insurance premium costs for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs retired with at least 15 years
of service who are at least 55 years of age or retired with at least 30 years of service at any age.
Proposed law provides that, for persons hired on or before June 30, 2018, and retiring after July 1,
2018, the 15 or 30 years of service must be with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Department and
otherwise retains present law.
Proposed law provides that for persons hired on or after July 1, 2018, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff
shall pay from the general fund premium costs as follows:
(1)50% for retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs with 15 years of full-time continuous and
creditable service with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office that are 55 years of age or older
and retiring from active service.
(2)100% for retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs with 30 years of full-time continuous and
creditable service with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office, regardless of age. 
Proposed law provides that the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office shall not be required to pay the
premium costs for any person who retires on or after July 1, 2018, if such person separates from full-
time continuos and creditable service with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office before meeting the
requirements of proposed law.
Effective July 1, 2018.
