[R.S. 1:13(B) and 24:177(E)] SB 248 Reengrossed 2018 Regular Session Johns Present law provides that juvenile court jurisdiction applies to delinquent acts committed by a person under the age of 17. Present law further provides as follows: (1)Beginning July 1, 2018, juvenile court jurisdiction shall extend to cover delinquent acts committed by a 17-year-old if the act is not a crime of violence. (2)Beginning July 1, 2020, juvenile court jurisdiction shall extend to cover all delinquent acts committed by a 17-year-old. With regard to delinquent acts that are not a crime of violence, proposed law delays the effective date on which juvenile court jurisdiction extends to 17-year-olds from July 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019. With regard to the extension of juvenile court jurisdiction to include all delinquent acts, including acts that are crimes of violence, committed by persons who are 17 years of age, proposed law retains present law. Change the effective date on which juvenile court jurisdiction extends to include delinquent acts that are not crimes of violence committed by 17-year-olds, and remove the provision which makes the effectiveness of extended jurisdiction contingent upon certification by the office of juvenile justice that there is adequate funding and resources available to accommodate the projected increase in caseload. 2. Restore present law relative to the effective date on which juvenile court jurisdiction extends to include all delinquent acts, including acts that are crimes of violence, committed by 17-year-olds.
