Present law provides that a coroner shall arrange for the disposition of paupers and the disposition
expenses shall not exceed the cost of the service.
Proposed law retains present law.
Present law provides that the disposition expenses for paupers shall be paid by the parish or
municipality in which the death occurred.
Proposed law provides that disposition expenses for paupers shall be paid by the coroner of the
parish of the decedent's domicile or, if the decedent's domicile is not in Louisiana, the coroner of the
parish where the death occurred.
Proposed law provides that if the decedent's domicile is not in Louisiana, the coroner of the parish
where the death occurred shall assume jurisdiction of the case and accept the remains for future
disposition.
Present law provides that disposition expenses of patients or residents of state-operated health care
or treatment facilities be paid by the state.
Proposed law retains present law.
Present law provides that the state or any municipality or parish may establish a maximum amount
to be paid for individual disposition expenses.
Proposed law provides that the state or any coroner may establish a maximum amount to be paid for
individual disposition expenses.
Effective August 1, 2018.
