SLS 18RS-1684 ORIGINAL 2018 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 66 BY SENATOR LONG COMMENDATIONS. Commends the LSUA men's basketball team for advancing to the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship game. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend the Louisiana State University at Alexandria men's basketball team on its 3 historic season, as they advanced to the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National 4 Championship game for the first time in program history. 5 WHEREAS, the Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA) men's basketball 6 team, the Generals, fought their way to the championship game in Kansas City, Missouri in 7 March 2018, to face the Graceland University Yellowjackets; and 8 WHEREAS, the fourteenth-ranked Generals were looking to become the first 9 Louisiana school to win a men's basketball national championship since Grambling State 10 University won the NAIA championship in 1961; and 11 WHEREAS, the LSUA Generals advanced from the Naismith Bracket to the Fab 12 Four of the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship Tournament for the 13 second consecutive year and only the second time in the program's history; and 14 WHEREAS, the championship game was hard fought between both teams, finishing 15 regulation in a seventy-two to seventy-two tie, sending the contest to overtime, as the 16 Generals missed a shot at the buzzer necessitating the additional playing time; and 17 WHEREAS, LSUA took an eight point deficit into halftime and then ripped off runs 18 of fifteen points to four and fifteen to two to give the team a seventy to sixty-six lead with Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 66 SLS 18RS-1684 ORIGINAL 1 less than two minutes left in regulation, however the Graceland Yellowjackets roared back 2 to tie the game; and 3 WHEREAS, both teams led during overtime, but as the game came to the last 4 seconds with the teams tied at eighty, the LSUA defense forced the ball out of the hands of 5 the Yellowjackets' best shooter, however another player took the ball out of his teammate's 6 hands and launched a three-pointer that hit just as the buzzer sounded, winning the game 7 eighty-three to eighty, and dashing the dreams of the Generals; and 8 WHEREAS, the Generals' head coach, Larry Cordaro, pronounced the game 9 "unbelievable" with his team leaving "it all out on the court tonight" and refusing to allow 10 a single shot to define an outstanding season for his basketball team that finished the season 11 with an impressive twenty-nine wins; and 12 WHEREAS, after the championship game the NAIA announced its All-American 13 teams and Jordin Williams of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was named a First Team 14 All-American, and finished his final season as a General with over seven hundred points 15 scored, shattering the previous LSUA record by more than two hundred points, surpassing 16 fifteen hundred career points, finished his career with All-Conference first team honors and 17 NAIA All-Tournament honors, as well; and 18 WHEREAS, Second Team All-American honors for the second consecutive season 19 went to Brandon Moss, also a senior, of Bessemer, Alabama, who followed a 20 record-breaking junior year with one hundred more points scored in his senior campaign, 21 finishing with an average of sixteen point six points scored per game and finishing his 22 two-year LSUA career with the third most points scored in program history with over eleven 23 hundreds point scored, leaving his mark on the LSUA record books; and 24 WHEREAS, William Claiborne finished the championship game with eighteen 25 points and joined his teammate, Jordin Williams, on the NAIA All-Tournament team; and 26 WHEREAS, two record-breaking seasons and two consecutive trips to the NAIA Fab 27 Four is a significant accomplishment for the LSUA Generals and bodes well for the future 28 of NAIA basketball in the heart of Louisiana. 29 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 30 commend the Louisiana State University at Alexandria men's basketball team on its historic Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 66 SLS 18RS-1684 ORIGINAL 1 season, as they advanced to the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship 2 game. 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 4 LSUA Generals men's basketball head coach, Larry Cordaro, on behalf of his team and the 5 entire university.
