SLS 18RS-2157 ORIGINAL 2018 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 72 BY SENATORS BARROW, COLOMB, HEWITT, MIZELL AND PETERSON AND REPRESENTATIVES AMEDEE, CARPENTER, DAVIS, EMERSON, HILFERTY, HILL, HODGES, HORTON, JACKSON, NANCY LANDRY, MARCELLE, NORTON, SMITH, STOKES, THOMAS AND WHITE COMMENDATIONS. Commends Margaret Elizabeth Britton upon being selected as a recipient of a 2018 High School Women of Excellence Award and a Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation Scholarship. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Margaret Elizabeth Britton upon her receipt of a 2018 Women of Excellence 3 Award from the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation in the category 4 of High School Women of Excellence and upon being a recipient of a Louisiana 5 Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation Scholarship. 6 WHEREAS, Margaret "Maggie" Britton is the daughter of Eugene and Janet Britton, 7 has two sisters, Ana and Emma, and is currently a senior at East Ascension High School in 8 Gonzales, Louisiana; and 9 WHEREAS, she will graduate as valedictorian of her class with a 4.84 grade point 10 average and plans to attend Mississippi State University in the fall where she will major in 11 chemical engineering with a minor in global engineering leadership; and 12 WHEREAS, her career goals include working for a chemical company, thereby being 13 given an opportunity to travel the world; and 14 WHEREAS, Maggie's high school experience has given her the opportunity to be 15 involved in many different clubs and organizations, including president of the Beta Club, 16 president of the Spanish Club, president of the Math Club, secretary/treasurer for Future 17 Business Leaders of America, National Honors Society, soccer, and tennis; and 18 WHEREAS, she has played soccer since the age of four, plays the position of Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 72 SLS 18RS-2157 ORIGINAL 1 goalkeeper, and has been awarded All District honors and First Team All-Metro for soccer 2 three years in a row; and 3 WHEREAS, Maggie holds the position of first-court singles on the tennis team, 4 placed second at the Louisiana State Beta Convention in Science Division II which qualified 5 her to compete at the National Convention, and scored in the Top Ten at Nationals; and 6 WHEREAS, she is also a thirteen-year Girl Scout and a recent recipient of the Gold 7 Award, the most prestigious award in the world for girls; and 8 WHEREAS, the requirements to earn the Gold Award include identifying an issue 9 in one's own community, developing a plan to tackle the issue, and taking action on such 10 plan in a meaningful, long-lasting manner; and 11 WHEREAS, Maggie's Gold Award project was titled "Going for the Goal", which 12 highlighted the continued relief effort from the flood of 2016, and resulted in the donation 13 of five basketball goals, five basketballs, and a "Buddy Bench", which she built herself, to 14 a local primary school which suffered the loss of such equipment during the flooding event; 15 and 16 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation created the 17 Women of Excellence Awards to recognize and honor extraordinary women of excellence 18 across the state for their outstanding achievements and contributions; and 19 WHEREAS, recipients of the Women of Excellence Awards exhibit characteristics 20 of integrity and professionalism, personify excellence in their area of specialty, and are 21 committed to community service to better society as a whole; and 22 WHEREAS, for 2018, there are two categories for the Women of Excellence 23 Awards: College Women of Excellence and High School Women of Excellence; and 24 WHEREAS, the recipients of the 2018 Women of Excellence Awards are being 25 recognized at the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation's Women of 26 Excellence Awards & Scholarships Ceremony and Reception on Tuesday, April 24, 2018; 27 and 28 WHEREAS, Maggie has been named a recipient of a 2018 Women of Excellence 29 Award in the category of High School Women of Excellence and is also a recipient of a 30 Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation Scholarship for her accomplishments Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 72 SLS 18RS-2157 ORIGINAL 1 and personification of excellence in integrity, character, academics, leadership, and 2 community service; and 3 WHEREAS, Maggie merits a sincere and heartfelt measure of commendation for her 4 dedication to excellence and her outstanding accomplishments, and it is appropriate for the 5 Legislature of Louisiana to commend Maggie upon receipt of a 2018 Women of Excellence 6 Award from the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation and of a Louisiana 7 Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation Scholarship. 8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 9 commend Margaret "Maggie" Elizabeth Britton upon receipt of a 2018 Women of 10 Excellence Award from the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation in the 11 category of High School Women of Excellence and the Louisiana Legislative Women's 12 Caucus Foundation Scholarship; does hereby recognize and record for posterity her singular 13 contributions to the citizens of Louisiana; and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for 14 the tremendous pride and honor that she brings to her community and the state of Louisiana. 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 16 Margaret "Maggie" Elizabeth Britton.
