Requests the law enforcement agencies of Louisiana to take advantage of the Attorney General's Drug Take Back Box program to receive free receptacles for the safe disposal of opioids. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To request the law enforcement agencies of Louisiana to take advantage of the Attorney 3 General's Drug Take Back Box program to receive free receptacles for the safe 4 disposal of opioids. 5 WHEREAS, Attorney General Jeff Landry has partnered with Blue Cross and Blue 6 Shield of Louisiana and the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators to 7 implement a Drug Take Back Box program to provide free receptacles to law enforcement 8 for the safe disposal of opioids; and 9 WHEREAS, the opioid crisis has devastated thousands of families throughout 10 Louisiana and millions of families nationwide; and 11 WHEREAS, a staggering sixty-five percent of all opioid addictions begin due to 12 access to the drugs by friends, family, and acquaintances of the lawful prescription holder; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration regulates the 15 disposal of controlled dangerous substances; and 16 WHEREAS, only certain entities registered with the United States Drug Enforcement 17 Administration are allowed to maintain a collection receptacle at their registered location; 18 and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 98 SLS 18RS-2939 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, law enforcement agencies are allowable and authorized receptacle 2 locations; and 3 WHEREAS, Attorney General Landry has taken the lead on a multi-disciplinary 4 approach to fighting the opioid epidemic by connecting the drop boxes made available free 5 of charge by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and the National Association of Drug 6 Diversion Investigators to local law enforcement agencies; and 7 WHEREAS, as of April 2018, more than fifty-five law enforcement agencies in 8 thirty-five parishes have taken advantage of the Drug Take Back Box program and now have 9 a safe and easy way for Louisiana citizens to dispose of dangerous drugs and prevent them 10 from being stolen, abused, or misused; and 11 WHEREAS, there are many parishes that have yet to take advantage of this most 12 important resource to help get drugs off the streets; and 13 WHEREAS, Attorney General Landry is committed to fighting the crime and opioid 14 epidemics plaguing our state, and he wants to do so in partnership with each of our sixty- 15 four parishes. 16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 17 urge and request the law enforcement agencies of Louisiana to take advantage of the 18 Attorney General's Drug Take Back Box program to receive free receptacles for the safe 19 disposal of opioids. 20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 21 Louisiana Sheriff's Association, Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police, the Louisiana 22 Municipal Association, and the Louisiana Attorney General's Office.
