SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 104

COMMENDATIONS. Commends LSU student Madelyn Smith on being named a 2018
Udall Scholar.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Louisiana State University student Madelyn Smith of Lafayette, Louisiana,
3 on being named a 2018 Udall Scholar.
4 WHEREAS, Madelyn Smith is an Ogden Honors College and College of Agriculture
5 junior majoring in natural resource ecology and management; and
6 WHEREAS, Smith is also a LASAL Scholar and was awarded a 2017 Udall
7 Scholarship as a sophomore; and
8 WHEREAS, in this year's application, Smith wrote about the influential impact the
9 Udall Scholarship has had on her career goals and her commitment to Louisiana's coast; and
10 WHEREAS, Smith used funding from the Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors Leaders
11 Award to create a book, Louisiana Gone, which documents the sociocultural effects of
12 wetland loss through interviews and portraits of Louisiana coastal natives; and
13 WHEREAS, upon graduation, Smith plans to pursue a master's in environmental
14 management in hopes of exploring how the environment influences local culture and
15 creating policy that positively affects our environment in Louisiana; and
16 WHEREAS, the Udall Foundation was established by the United States Congress in
17 1992 as an independent executive branch agency to honor Morris K. Udall's lasting impact
18 on this nation's environment, public lands, and natural resources, and his support of the

1 rights and self-governance of American Indians and Alaska Natives; and
2 WHEREAS, this is the first time that more than one Udall Scholar has been selected
3 from LSU.
4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
5 does hereby commend Madelyn Smith for being named a 2018 Udall Scholar.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
7 Madelyn Smith.
