SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 177

SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH. Recognizes May as Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
month in Louisiana.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To recognize May as "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren" month in Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, studies indicate that grandparent caregiving is not as rare a phenomenon
4 as is commonly believed, and that it cuts across class, race, and gender lines; and
5 WHEREAS, for various reasons, grandparents sometimes take on the primary
6 responsibility for raising a grandchild and a growing number of grandparents are now taking
7 on that role; and
8 WHEREAS, the United States Census Bureau shows more than six million children
9 nationwide are being raised in households headed by grandparents and other relatives; and
10 WHEREAS, in Louisiana, approximately one hundred seventeen thousand eight
11 hundred fifty-nine children live in grandparent-headed households; and
12 WHEREAS, another twenty-six thousand six hundred ninety-one children live in
13 households headed by other relatives; and
14 WHEREAS, grandparents across the United States are accepting the responsibility
15 of raising their grandchildren, thereby providing a stable, loving environment and helping
16 to ensure that they prosper and grow into productive members of society.
17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
18 does hereby recognize May as "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren" in Louisiana.

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
2 Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Information Center of Louisiana.
