SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 177

A RESOLUTION
To recognize May as "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren" month in Louisiana.
WHEREAS, studies indicate that grandparent caregiving is not as rare a phenomenon
as is commonly believed, and that it cuts across class, race, and gender lines; and
WHEREAS, for various reasons, grandparents sometimes take on the primary
responsibility for raising a grandchild and a growing number of grandparents are now taking
on that role; and
WHEREAS, the United States Census Bureau shows more than six million children
nationwide are being raised in households headed by grandparents and other relatives; and
WHEREAS, in Louisiana, approximately one hundred seventeen thousand eight
hundred fifty-nine children live in grandparent-headed households; and
WHEREAS, another twenty-six thousand six hundred ninety-one children live in
households headed by other relatives; and
WHEREAS, grandparents across the United States are accepting the responsibility
of raising their grandchildren, thereby providing a stable, loving environment and helping
to ensure that they prosper and grow into productive members of society.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby recognize May as "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren" in Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Information Center of Louisiana.
