SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 202
BY SENATOR BISHOP 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School
of Dentistry on its fiftieth anniversary.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry on its
3 fiftieth anniversary.
4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature authorized establishment of the LSU School
5 of Dentistry in 1968 to ensure the state maintained its ability to train the next generation of
6 dental health professionals; and
7 WHEREAS, the LSU School of Dentistry began classes during its inaugural year in
8 barracks on a 22-acre tract near New Orleans City Park that originally served as World War
9 II housing for the U.S. Navy; and
10 WHEREAS, the LSU School of Dentistry is unique among the 66 dental schools in
11 the United States in that it offers degrees in dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental laboratory
12 technology; and
13 WHEREAS, the LSU School of Dentistry has been instrumental in establishing,
14 promoting, and stabilizing the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans Center for
15 Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (CIPECP), a program designed to
16 educate students from a wide range of health care disciplines in collaborative patient care;
17 and
18 WHEREAS, the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry was awarded the 2018

1 Gies Award for Vision in Academic Dental Institutions on March 19, 2018, for its
2 development and commitment to interprofessional education; and
3 WHEREAS, the William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation and Achievement
4 (Gies Awards) were established in 2007 and have become the preeminent recognition for
5 significant contributions to oral health and dental education; and
6 WHEREAS, nearly 6,000 dental professionals have been educated at the LSU School
7 of Dentistry since 1968 and today approximately 80 percent of the dental professionals in
8 Louisiana are graduates of the LSU School of Dentistry.
9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
10 does hereby commend the LSU School of Dentistry, as well as its faculty, staff, alumni, and
11 students on its fifty-year anniversary. 
12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dr.
13 Henry Gremillion, Dean of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry.
