SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 63

COMMENDATIONS. Commends the Carencro High School Golden Bears basketball team
on winning the LHSAA Class 4A state championship.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the Carencro High School Golden Bears basketball team on winning the
3 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A state championship.
4 WHEREAS, the Carencro High School Golden Bears defeated the Woodlawn High
5 School Knights by a score of 75-73 to win the Louisiana High School Athletic Association
6 Class 4A state championship on March 9, 2018, at the Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles,
7 Louisiana; and
8 WHEREAS, with mere seconds remaining in the contest and the score tied at 73-73,
9 senior guard, Lou Despanie stole a pass and quickly fed the ball to Nicholas Carmouche for
10 the game-winning layup to earn the Golden Bears the state title; and
11 WHEREAS, Lou Despanie finished the game with nineteen points, 5-of-7 shooting
12 from 3-point land, and the steal of a lifetime; and
13 WHEREAS, Nicholas Carmouche finished the game with fifteen points, three
14 rebounds, eight assists, and one block; and
15 WHEREAS, the title game Most Valuable Player honors went to Jeremiah August
16 who finished with nineteen points, thirteen rebounds, and three assists; and
17 WHEREAS, the members of the talented Golden Bears squad, Braylon Chaisson,
18 Artrell Marks, Chance Prejean, Treviun Williams, Nicholas Carmouche, Corey Willis,

1 Jeremiah August, Elijah Pete, Holden Pellerin, Jatrell Marks, Byron Fobbs, Joseph Charles,
2 Demyras Despanie, Bailey Despanie, Julian Landor, and Traylon Prejean, merit recognition
3 and congratulations for their extraordinary performance and their competitive spirit
4 throughout the season and the tournament; and
5 WHEREAS, the members of the team performed at the highest level of athletic
6 excellence throughout the tournament and each of them deserves recognition for their vital
7 contribution to the winning effort; and
8 WHEREAS, head coach Christopher Kovatch and assistant head coach La'Ryan
9 Gary, and assistant coaches Antoine Babineaux and Brandon Richard, instilled an ethic of
10 winning and demonstrated the kind of leadership and motivational skills needed to produce
11 winners both on and off the court; and
12 WHEREAS, the Carencro High School Golden Bears basketball team is recognized
13 for the well-deserved accolades earned throughout the season and showcasing the
14 extraordinary athletic abilities they have displayed, particularly at the most difficult level of
15 high school competition.
16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
17 does hereby express its sincere congratulations to the Carencro High School Golden Bears
18 basketball team and their coaches on winning the LHSAA Class 4A state championship and
19 for the sportsmanship shown while achieving such high honors for themselves, for Carencro
20 High School, the city of Lafayette, and the state of Louisiana.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
22 principal of Carencro High School.
