SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 91

COMMENDATIONS. Commends the Grambling State University Tigers women's
basketball team for its outstanding season.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the Grambling State University Tigers women's basketball team, head coach,
3 assistant coaches, athletic director, and university president for their outstanding
4 2017-2018 season.
5 WHEREAS, the Grambling State University Tigers women's basketball team
6 finished the season with a record of nineteen wins and advanced to the NCAA Division I
7 Women's Basketball Championship after performing at high levels of excellence; and
8 WHEREAS, Grambling State made their first appearance in the NCAA Division I
9 Women's Basketball Championship for the first time in nearly twenty years; and
10 WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
11 Women's Basketball Tournament championship; and
12 WHEREAS, Grambling State secured the No. 3 seed in the SWAC Tourney and
13 received the SWAC's automatic berth to the 2018 NCAA Division I Basketball
14 Championship; and
15 WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers were led by junior Shakyla Hill, senior Monisha Neal,
16 junior Jazmin Boyd, and freshman Justice Coleman, who have each contributed greatly to
17 the success of the Grambling State University Tigers women's basketball team along with
18 other team members, Takerra Parsons, Kailyn Gideon, Hannah Henderson, Darae Taylor,

1 Alexus Williams, and Ariel Williams; and
2 WHEREAS, the exemplary accomplishments of the Lady Tigers could not have been
3 achieved without the guidance and skills of their Head Coach Freddie Murray, Assistant
4 Coaches Isayra Diaz and David Pierre, Director of Basketball Operations Eumarcus Hicks,
5 Athletics Director Paul Bryant, and the honorable President Richard J. Gallot, Jr, all of
6 whom have demonstrated the kind of leadership, vision, and motivational skills needed to
7 produce champion achievement both on the basketball court and in life; and
8 WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers captured an impressive 72-68 victory over Southern
9 University which included the Lady Tigers pulling through to capture the win; and
10 WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers traveled to Waco, Texas for the NCAA Division I
11 Women's Basketball Championship; and
12 WHEREAS, in the first-round NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship,
13 the Lady Tigers maintained the highest level of sportsmanship and displayed great character;
14 the first-round game ended with incredible effort as they faced the Number two seed in the
15 NCAA Women's Basketball Division I; and
16 WHEREAS, the talents and determination of the Grambling State University Tigers
17 women's basketball team provided their fans with exciting basketball competition; and
18 WHEREAS, the members and coaches of the Grambling State University women's
19 basketball team merit a sincere measure of commendation for their remarkable athletic feats
20 and for the honor they have brought to Grambling State University.
21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
22 does hereby commend the members of the Grambling State University Tigers women's
23 basketball team, their Head Coach Freddie Murray, Assistant Coaches Isayra Diaz and David
24 Pierre, Director of Basketball Operations Eumarcus Hicks, Athletics Director Paul Bryant,
25 and the honorable President Richard J. Gallot Jr. for their outstanding achievements during
26 the 2017-2018 season, which included competing in the NCAA Division I Women's
27 Basketball Championship, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous
28 pride they have brought to the University of Louisiana System, Grambling State University,
29 the community, and the state of Louisiana.
30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Head
