SHERIFFS: Provides relative to payment of insurance premiums for certain sheriffs and
deputy sheriffs of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office
1 AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 13:5554(P), relative to sheriffs; to provide relative to retiree
3 health benefits; to provide for group insurance premiums for the sheriff and sheriff
4 deputies of St. Landry Parish; to provide certain criteria; and to provide for related
5 matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 13:5554(P) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
8 ยง5554. Group insurance; kinds; amounts; subrogation

10 P. Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection D of this Section, in the
11 parish of St. Landry, one hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital,
12 surgical, and medical expense insurance and the first ten thousand dollars of life
13 insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section shall be paid from the
14 sheriff's general fund for any sheriff or full-time deputy sheriff who has retired from
15 the St. Landry Parish sheriff's office and who is entitled to receive monthly benefits
16 from the Sheriff's Pension and Relief Fund and who has either of the following: the
17 sheriff of St. Landry Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the premium
18 cost of group insurance for any sheriff or full-time deputy sheriff who has retired
19 from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office and who is entitled to receive monthly
20 benefits from the Sheriff's Pension and Relief Fund as follows:

1 (1) At least twelve years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish
2 sheriff's office and is at least fifty-five years of ageFor any sheriff or deputy sheriff
3 who was hired on or before July 1, 2019, one hundred percent of the premium costs
4 of group hospital, surgical, and medical expense insurance, and the first ten thousand
5 dollars of life insurance contracted for pursuant to the provisions of this Section, if
6 the sheriff or deputy sheriff retired with either of the following:
7 (a) At least twelve years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish
8 Sheriff's Office and is at least fifty-five years of age.
9 (b) At least thirty years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish
10 Sheriff's Office, regardless of age.
11 (2) At least thirty years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish
12 sheriff's office, regardless of age For any sheriff or deputy sheriff who is hired after
13 July 1, 2019, one hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical,
14 medical expense, and dental insurance, and the first ten thousand dollars of life
15 insurance contracted for pursuant to the provision of this Section, if the sheriff or
16 deputy sheriff retired with either of the following:
17 (a) At least fifteen years of continuous full-time service with the St. Landry
18 Parish Sheriff's Office and is at least sixty-five years of age.
19 (b) At least thirty years of continuous full-time service with the St. Landry
20 Parish Sheriff's Office and is at least fifty-five years of age.

Abstract: Requires the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office to pay certain group insurance
premiums for certain retirees with years of full-time service with the St. Landry
Parish Sheriff's Office.
Present law requires the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office to pay 100% of the premium costs
of group hospital, surgical, and medical expense insurance and the first $10,000 of life
insurance from the sheriff's general fund for any sheriff or full-time deputy sheriff that has

retired from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office and is entitled to receive monthly benefits
from the Sheriff's Pension and Relief Fund and has either of the following:
(1)At least 12 years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office and
is at least 55 years of age.
(2)At least 30 years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office,
regardless of age.
Proposed law retains present law relative to persons hired on or before July 1, 2019.
For persons hired after July 1, 2019, proposed law adds dental insurance premiums to the
list of premiums that are required to be paid from the sheriff's general fund. Further provides
that in order to receive the present and proposed law benefits, the sheriff or deputy sheriff
shall retire with either of the following:
(1)At least 15 years of continuous full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's
Office and is at least 65 years of age.
(2)At least 30 years of continuous full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's
Office and is at least 55 years of age.
