ACT 309 (HB 298) 2019 Regular Session Dustin Miller
Existing law requires the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office to pay 100 percent of the
premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and medical expense insurance and the first
$10,000 of life insurance from the sheriff's general fund for any sheriff or full-time deputy
sheriff that has retired from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office and is entitled to receive
monthly benefits from the Sheriff's Pension and Relief Fund and has either of the following:
(1)At least 12 years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office and
is at least 55 years of age.
(2)At least 30 years of full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office,
regardless of age.
New law retains existing law relative to persons hired on or before July 1, 2019.
New law provides that, for persons hired after July 1, 2019, in order to receive the existing
law benefits, the sheriff or deputy sheriff shall retire with either of the following:
(1)At least 15 years of continuous full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's
Office and is at least 65 years of age.
(2)At least 30 years of continuous full-time service with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's
Office and is at least 55 years of age.
Effective August 1, 2019.
