HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 29

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Community Coffee on its centennial celebration
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To commend Community Coffee on its centennial celebration.
3 WHEREAS, in 1919, Henry Norman "Cap" Saurage, Sr., founded an extraordinary
4coffee company to honor his friends, his neighbors, and his community; in celebration of
5Community Coffee's one hundredth year, it is appropriate to commend the company; and
6 WHEREAS, Community Coffee, the largest family-owned and operated retail coffee
7brand in America, is an enduring company that serves as a resource to its employees,
8customers, and communities; four generations of the Saurage family have operated the
9company since its founding a century ago; and
10 WHEREAS, the company dedicates approximately 2.5% of its pretax earnings to
11charitable, socially-responsible programs regionally, nationally, and internationally;
12Community Coffee Company supports disaster relief efforts and provides coffee to shelters,
13first responders, and others affected by such disasters; and
14 WHEREAS, for thirty years Community Cash for Schools has helped schools across
15the southern United States earn more than $7.4 million to serve students' needs: acquiring
16textbooks, computers, playground equipment, and even a bird sanctuary for a science class;
17in 2018 more than eight hundred schools earned over $300,000 through the program; and
18 WHEREAS, the Dream Teachers H. Norman Saurage III Service Award annually
19recognizes a Louisiana public school teacher or education professional for outstanding
20service to the community; all finalists receive a year's supply of free coffee and the winner
21receives a grant; and

1 WHEREAS, the company's Military Match Program supports American troops
2stationed abroad by doubling online orders sent to active-duty military personnel; the intent
3of the program is to remind each and every service member that they are missed, they are
4loved, and they are respected; and
5 WHEREAS, Community Coffee conducts a variety of social support programs for
6coffee farmers in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico; the company's partnership with Southwest
7Airlines has helped open two satellite schools in Chipas, Mexico, where residents have
8historically been challenged by the terrain and climate to reach schools in far-away towns;
9Community Coffee provides educational programming about agriculture, health, safety, and
10wellness in the Mexican villages of Buenavista and Tierra y Libertad; and
11 WHEREAS, Community Coffee merits a special measure of commendation for its
12steadfast dedication to excellence over the past one hundred years and the tremendous pride
13and honor it brings to the state of Louisiana.
14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
15commend Community Coffee on its centennial celebration; does hereby recognize and
16record for posterity the company's regional, national, and international philanthropic efforts;
17and does hereby extend best wishes for continued success in the future.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
19to Donna Saurage.
