"Bill" Crawford on his retirement from the Louisiana State Law Institute 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To commend Mr. William E. "Bill" Crawford on his retirement from the Louisiana State 3 Law Institute. 4 WHEREAS, after four decades of distinguished service as director of the Louisiana 5State Law Institute (LSLI), Mr. William E. Crawford retired in September 2018; Bill 6Crawford is widely recognized as one of the best and brightest lawyers in the state of 7Louisiana; his knowledge of civil procedure in Louisiana and his teaching skills are 8unparalleled; and 9 WHEREAS, the LSLI is charged with promoting and encouraging the clarification 10and simplification of the law of Louisiana and its better adaptation to present social needs, 11securing the better administration of justice, and carrying on scholarly legal research and 12scientific legal work; and 13 WHEREAS, after graduating from Louisiana State University law school in 1955, 14where he was editor-in-chief of the Louisiana Law Review, Bill Crawford joined the Chaffe 15McCall law firm in New Orleans; he served as secretary-treasurer of the Louisiana State Bar 16Association for two terms, from 1960 to 1962; and 17 WHEREAS, he became a faculty member of the Louisiana State University Paul M. 18Hebert Law Center in 1965; he became assistant dean of the law center in 1966, and 19Professor in 1971; in 1985 Mr. Crawford was awarded the James J. Bailey Professorship in 20Law and in 2003 the Louisiana Bar Foundation named him Distinguished Professor; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-120 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 99 1 WHEREAS, his publications include every special edition of the Louisiana Code of 2Civil Procedure from 1983 to 2019, the revision of the three-volume Formulary as part of 3West's Louisiana Statutes Annotated Civil Procedure, Volumes 10, 11, and 12; and Volume 412, Louisiana Civil Law Treatise, Tort Law, in 2000; and 5 WHEREAS, Bill Crawford has also served as Special Master to the U.S. District 6Court in Bankruptcy Litigation; and 7 WHEREAS, the LSLI flourished and excelled under the direction of Professor 8Crawford, who oversaw and directed the work of the institute in its revision of the Civil 9Code, the Revised Statutes, the Code of Civil Procedure, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 10and the Children's Code, the introduction and adoption of the Louisiana Code of Evidence, 11and other special projects as assigned by the Legislature of Louisiana; and 12 WHEREAS, one of the state's most gifted legal scholars, William E. "Bill" Crawford 13will remain an inspiration to his students, peers, family, and friends for the vital 14contributions he has made in his distinguished career of highly effective service. 15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 16commend Mr. William E. "Bill" Crawford on his retirement from the Louisiana State Law 17Institute; does hereby recognize and record his notable accomplishments and manifold 18contributions to the Louisiana State Law Institute, LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, and to 19his students, colleagues, family, and friends; and does hereby extend to him best wishes for 20continued success and happiness as he embarks upon new challenges and endeavors. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 22to Bill Crawford.
