"Bill" Crawford on his retirement from the Louisiana State Law Institute. WHEREAS, after four decades of distinguished service as director of the Louisiana State Law Institute (LSLI), Mr. William E. Crawford retired in September 2018; Bill Crawford is widely recognized as one of the best and brightest lawyers in the state of Louisiana; his knowledge of civil procedure in Louisiana and his teaching skills are unparalleled; and WHEREAS, the LSLI is charged with promoting and encouraging the clarification and simplification of the law of Louisiana and its better adaptation to present social needs, securing the better administration of justice, and carrying on scholarly legal research and scientific legal work; and WHEREAS, after graduating from Louisiana State University law school in 1955, where he was editor-in-chief of the Louisiana Law Review, Bill Crawford joined the Chaffe McCall law firm in New Orleans; he served as secretary-treasurer of the Louisiana State Bar Association for two terms, from 1960 to 1962; and Page 1 of 2 HCR NO. 99 ENROLLED WHEREAS, he became a faculty member of the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1965; he became assistant dean of the law center in 1966, and Professor in 1971; in 1985 Mr. Crawford was awarded the James J. Bailey Professorship in Law and in 2003 the Louisiana Bar Foundation named him Distinguished Professor; and WHEREAS, his publications include every special edition of the Louisiana Code of Civil Procedure from 1983 to 2019, the revision of the three-volume Formulary as part of West's Louisiana Statutes Annotated Civil Procedure, Volumes 10, 11, and 12; and Volume 12, Louisiana Civil Law Treatise, Tort Law, in 2000; and WHEREAS, Bill Crawford has also served as Special Master to the U.S. District Court in Bankruptcy Litigation; and WHEREAS, the LSLI flourished and excelled under the direction of Professor Crawford, who oversaw and directed the work of the institute in its revision of the Civil Code, the Revised Statutes, the Code of Civil Procedure, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Children's Code, the introduction and adoption of the Louisiana Code of Evidence, and other special projects as assigned by the Legislature of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, one of the state's most gifted legal scholars, William E. "Bill" Crawford will remain an inspiration to his students, peers, family, and friends for the vital contributions he has made in his distinguished career of highly effective service. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Mr. William E. "Bill" Crawford on his retirement from the Louisiana State Law Institute; does hereby recognize and record his notable accomplishments and manifold contributions to the Louisiana State Law Institute, the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, and to his students, colleagues, family, and friends; and does hereby extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness as he embarks upon new challenges and endeavors.
